Other teams have chosen to have their in fielders throw the ball to the ground in front of first base so the first baseman may stop the grounder and then tag the base. This is much more efficient and there are more outs and less over throws at first as a result.
Everyone gets a trophy, so no one cares about the t-ball champion.
Just focus on fundamentals, and give kids shots at various positions.
If you always stick the worst player on the team in right field he will never learn.

quote:Probably. I have several of the dads help out in ever practice and game. I try to keep instruction and drills in no more than a 3 to 1 ratio. Otherwise the kids don't get enough individual attention or supervision. Also, have a dad that played for the Angels (minor league), so having him help with the swing has been good as well.
the problem with their team is the parents IMO.

maybe you can quit thinking you know everything because you coach T ball.
quote:It isn't, but there are lots of t-ball coaches that either don't know enough about teaching kids that age or don't know enough about baseball fundamentals. Maybe that is a bigger problem than t-ball itself. With a couple of exceptions, the coaches in our league are outstanding with the kids.
you act like it's some highly involved and complicated thing to understand.

I just think at that age, you don't get a lot of benefit by putting your kid in T-ball, they just aren't developed enough. I guess if you don't plan to spend time with your kid then it would be better than nothing. JMO.

Do you have kids? Have you ever coached that age group?

Well, my kid has played all stars, regional select and of course year round travel tee-ball at all of the big tournaments. we work on fundamental throwing to first base for at least 3 hours in each of our 4 weekly practices. We have brought in a former major league infielder to be our traveling fielding coach.
These kids are getting such a better experience than those bush league yahoos playing rec league...they will never get scholarships or get drafted in those crappy leagues.

I have seen kids learn and get better. I think it is a good base for most kids. It is also just fun for them.

in the 2 games I've seen, the parents (outside of a few) don't really give a shite and it's just something to have their kid gone for an hour or so a day. they don't care about fundamentals or even baseball itself, just that they get a break from their kids, so they don't really care if it looks like a shitshow out there because a 20 year old college kid can't handle 15-20 4 year olds.

We only have 10 players on our team and we use a minimum of 4 dads helping coach and we usually have 5.

We teach kids how to throw the ball properly, how to catch, how to take a proper stance and grip at the plate, how to field a ground ball, how to swing the bat, the positions on the filed, which bases to run to, when to run, how to run through first base. It is providing a starting point for kids based on their level of physical maturity and coordination.
Agreed. We are also teaching thrid base coach calls and hand signals so the runner knows when to advance. Most importantly we are teaching sportsmanship and that working toward improvement and doing your best is always the goal.
The real key to your statement is "their level of physical maturity and coordination".
We have learned some kids take in lots of instruction while others are lucky to get one concept every other practice/game. You let the ones that learn slowly do so and let them have fun. We have one 4 yr old who puts himself in and takes himself out of games randomly and loves to make sand angels. He really likes playing but his attention span is short.
As far as throwing a hissy fit, we talk about sportsmandhip and playing as a team before and after practicies and games, give out 2 "tough awards" (a permenant marker T on their ball caps) each game for the kids who got injured or tried extra hard, and constantly encourage the kids. We really dont have issues with kids throwing fits.

they had 2 20 something year olds, but one moved so it's just the 1 now.
before the season, they were scrambling to find a coach since apparently none of the dads that are at all the games care enough to do it. she wanted me to coach and I said hell no.

We had a kid ask to go to bathroom after hitting, but he was 3rd from last. Coach said no and sent him out to 2nd base. Kid made it 4 batters before he just turned his back to us and pissed on the field.
That kid was my nephew, and it was the highlight of the year.

Just my opinion. I'm not saying everyone should do it.
Also don't like machine pitch, rather coach pitch for the same reasons i was talking about.

You are teaching them the correct way. T ball is just an introduction to the game. And while it shouldn't be a no score free for all, the goal shouldn't be winning every game. That is some crap that pisses the parents off but kids forget about that before you even get to Dairy Queen.

We have 13 kids on our team. We have three on the field coaches at all times and one or preferably two dugout moms.

Our park doesn't do it, but there is a park not far from here where they start the 4 and 5 year olds with coach pitch, but bring out the tee after x number of pitches. I haven't seen it in action, but it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Most of my players can easily hit coach pitch. Although being right next to them in tball to give them instruction on stance, grip, etc. is good IMO.

yep. what good does teaching a kid to pick up a ball from an angle he will never see again do?

quote:We do the same, but have dugout dads instead of moms. They run the batting order and keep the kids from killing themselves while waiting to bat.

It is not Tball that is the problem, it the shitty group of parents you have been exposed to. We have one parent that way. Pissed off white trash single mom who does not give a flying shite about her kid and twice we have had to search her down after practice becasue she just dropped him off and left. He is basically uncontrollable with an attention sapn shorter than the time it takes to say his first name.

I'd kick him off the team so his mom is forced to give a shite
