Historically, yes. Pedigree/history-wise, absolutely.

Currently, though, they are the undisputed basketball draw in the town. They're a legitimate Western Conference power and a threat to win the conference year in and year out while the Lakers have struggled to even make the playoffs of late.

Good info. Thanks.

Hmmm...not so fast. They are, however, gaining some ground

Any plans to move up to Washington?

Would be pretty stupid to move a team out of one of the largest sports markets to Seattle.

This. It's not going to happen. My opinion is that the next Seattle team comes via expansion, which is rumored to be a possibility around the time that the new TV contracts will be negotiated.

Even being the second team in LA is still more valuable than being in Seattle or anywhere else really.

NW Washington is a pretty good-sized market with a lot of fans and a good bit of money.

This is an interesting read about how seattle lost the sonics to OKC.

March 6, 2008 Mayor Nickels says a potential group headed by Steve Ballmer has agreed to put $150M into Key Arena and the City will put in $75M if the state legislature will agree to another $75M in public investment. Nickels proposes that they can present this $300M offer to the NBA BOG as an alternative offer before a relocation vote. The legislature, headed by Frank Chopp, declines.

quote:

April 8, 2008 Nickels says they will be unable to present the $300M offer to the BOG as the state will not put up the public money requirement of the proposal.

Stern makes a public statement in which he makes it crystal clear that the economics of the NBA require public financial support. He states, "The economics of team ownership at the present time, except in very unusual circumstances, requires some kind of public assistance. We had successful votes in San Antonio, Houston, OKC and Orlando. Usually there is support rather than opposition from city leaders."

April 15, 2008 The City and State Legislature, who refused to give any public subsidy to NBA, at least agree to combine to write a letter asking the NBA to prevent the team from moving.

I wonder how much the political climate there has changed. It was probably very difficult to obtain public monies given the economic collapse that was occurring in '08.

??

Seattle doesn't have a team.

It's not going to be the clippers.

They'll get one by expansion if/when that happens.

The bucks would've had a legit chance but they got bought and will probably stay there.

He bought it with his money. He did nothing illegal. He should still own the team.

They had legal grounds to terminate his(incompetent)ownership.

It's not about money.

None of that stuff in 2008 would have mattered anyways. Ballmer's $150m offer towards an arena was contingent on Bennett selling the team to him (good luck with forcing a sale). Once Bennett bought the team, there was almost a 0% of the Sonics staying. He did everything in his power to make it impossible for them to stay in the area.

There is already an arena plan in place, but it is contingent on Seattle having a guarantee that an NBA team is coming to town. Once that happens, the arena is set to be built and the hunt for an NHL team to share the building will heat up a lot.
