Then explain a caddy's job please.
A good pro caddy does some of these things:
- Works with the player to constantly understand range and confidence in every club that week.
- Plan a shot by shot approach for every round of each weekends tournament based on these distances and confidences in various clubs.
- Track all course rules and regulations so the player doesn't have to.
- Understand the breaks from every angle of the green, especially ones that aren't easily read by the naked eye.
- Play the "bouncer" at the tee box and elsewhere..
The list goes on and on but a great caddy can't just be picked up off the street.

How many times have you seen a Tour player ask his caddy for guidance on a rule? How many times have you seen a Tour player ask a Tour rules official for guidance on a rule?

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if this was mentioned but the only thing that got me about Stevies interview was him saying that this was the BEST weekend of his life. Makes me wonder if this was a snide remark aimed at Tiger. I am a big tiger fan but FWIW I am glad that Stevie and Adam won this tournament.

No but I'm sure Tiger Woods, Phil, Rory etc don't have to go find the homeless guy on the street to be their caddy.

All people are saying is "you're wrong" or "you've never played golf at a high level." Nobody has actually explained anything useful.
Here is what a Caddie does.
1. He studies the course like no other. He knows every tree, ridge in the green and everthing that could go wrong on a course. This information gives him the knowledge of how far a player is away from the hole. Most Caddies are accurate to the yard on how far it is to the hole on any course. They never say 170 ish. They are probably more accurate than the GPS you carry with you.
2. He studies his players shots, what club he is hitting well and what is he missing with. And it isn't only what club, but it is also what shot for him to hit. They say a Tour player has 9 differnt flight paths per club. Next short game, and what is his player doing right with that game, how much check is his balls having comming out of the rough.....
3. Counselor to his player.
4. making sure their are no rules violations for his player.
5. Reading greens, some caddies do this see bones.
If you think caddies only hang out with thier player for a practice round and the tournement you are crazy it is a relationship that you build. Reading a putt for two different players is a different reads.
All in all I think the 2-4 shot estimate is correct. What does this mean. Alot most weeks. Is a caddie going to make me play with the PGA Pro's, no would they improve my game, yes.

Caddies effect on the outcome are minimal at best.
So... Do you know anything about golf? Or do you just like starting threads to vent about things you don't know about?
Shouldn't the debate be on the difference a certain caddy makes?
Nobody is saying Tiger can freaking go out there and hoof his bag around a shoot the same as if Williams is on his bag.
But, could Tiger have won 14 majors with some full-time caddy that none of us has ever even heard of? Hell yes.

This where the thread strayed for some people. We are not saying a monkey could be a suitable caddie, but that a caddie's importance is over rated. You need to know golf to be a caddie, but to say that a caddie makes a big difference is just silly to me. If you switch Tiger's caddie with Ernie Els caddie then there wouldn't be any difference once they got use to one another.

I agree that it ultimately is up to the player to win or lose a tournament but to say that Tiger would have won all of those majors and even tournaments without Stevie isn't exactly a fair statement. I think that people underestimate how valuable Stevie was to Tiger. The guy is a very good caddy and knows his shite when it comes to courses and the type of game his player plays.

A caddys job is to shut up and carry the bag. If AND ONLY IF your golfer asks you a question do you give an opinion. Most of the time, just a yardage. No caddy in the world gives his opinion without being asked. The job is totally over-rated.
a. Do the work, know the yardages and greens.
b. When your golfer makes a decision back him up, positive feedback.
Thats about it!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All of this is pretty much 100% wrong. Keep up the good work

Is anybody even debating whether or not a caddie helps?
The point for me is that Fredrick friggin Jacobsen might have the greatest caddie on the planet but, who would know?

This.
Also, Bones might be the best caddy on tour, but Phil didn't need him to have a great college career.

i heard him and mike greenie this morning go on for an hour about how Donovan McNabb has been cheated and hated on so unfairly by teams, coaches, fans, media etc because he is not white "like Peyton Manning."
The answer from another thread question. Reason #1 McNabb is unlikable. Even Cowherd, after years of putting McNabb in the same sentence as Brady and Manning, did it AGAIN the other day (despite McNabb not even being remotely as average as he used to be)...(talking about Tebow) "we're not talking about Drew Brees, Manning or McNabb."
It's nuts. If that's not proof there has always been a media agenda for McNabb I don't know what needs to be said.
He might as well say: "DJ Steve Porter isn't Beethoven, Mozart or Mannheim Steamroller."

Here is what a Caddie does.
Right...mainly distance and knowing the terrain. Pretty much what others have said. Rules and regs are monitored by the officials, and they're the ones who get consulted if a situation arises. Not the caddy. In terms of "counseling" the player and reading greens, that's more what they do as a human being rather than a caddy. What I mean is that virtually anyone could do those two things, it's not just some magical "caddy skill."

I don't think that, nor do many others in this thread from what I can tell.

Of course he could...that's what he did. Was Williams some popular, famous caddy prior to Tiger picking him up?

He caddied for Norman and Floyd and was well respected, but not nearly as well known as he is now.

The point of this thread is that a caddie by no means should be getting the kind of publicity that he is getting. This media is making a news story out of NOTHING!! What Steve Williams thinks?? He didn't win anything! He didn't out-caddie the rest of the caddies...
