Steelers’ Mike Tomlin on Black head coaches: NFL hasn’t ‘been able to move the needle’

Mike Tomlin is speaking out about the lack of diversity among NFL leadership.
The Pittsburgh Steelers head coach specifically expressed his frustration over Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy being passed to fill a head coaching vacancy. Seven teams changed coaches during or after the 2020 season, per Pro Football Talk and each team reportedly requested a total of 58 interviews, including with Bieniemy.
“Bieniemy is a real head-scratcher for me,” Tomlin told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Every offensive coordinator Andy Reid has had in the last 20 years got a head job. One of those guys, Brad Childress, hired me in Minnesota in 2006. Now, Andy has the best offense he’s ever had and [Bieniemy] can’t get a job?”
“I normally don’t talk publicly during the offseason, but this is a critical issue for us,” Tomlin said in the interview. “As important as this is for us in the NFL, it’s also important for us as a society. It deserves all the attention it gets.”
Tomlin also addressed criticism for not having a Black coordinator during his 14-years helming the Steelers.
“I always do what is best for our organization,” he said. “I believe in hiring from within in most cases. …I’m highly sensitive to it, but I don’t regret (not having a Black coordinator). I’ve had some good (Black) coaches leave for other jobs.”
Former NFL player Shannon Sharpe heard what he had to say, but he’s not buying it. “Mike Tomlin is in position to hire black coordinators and he hasn’t in 14 years, so I’m not going to let him throw stones at everyone else,” he wrote on Twitter. His post accompanied a video of Sharpe putting Tomlin on blast during a segment on Undisputed.

That’s all Andy. Nagy proved that.

Why don't they just say "black coaches"?
Everybody knows that is ALL they are talking about.

Do people really think that NFL owners and GMs sit around and say “I think this his guy can win us a Super Bowl, but let’s not hire him because he’s black”?

It does seem odd - especially since most of the teams hiring new coaches have had black coaches, so it isn't race.

No. But there probably are a handful who underrate black candidates and don't see them as "cerebral" enough. And there are only 32 jobs.

yep, this is my argument. NFL owners are by and large businessmen, and the goal is to win. Period. To think that they don't hire based upon skin color or something else is beyond stupid.

Exactly. Makes no sense. A good head coach is a good head coach. No one is passing on black coaches they think will lead them to a super bowl just because they're black. It's completely illogical.

The league may be 70% Black but the smart, qualified Black player who is head coaching material has to be tiny.
If there is a qualified Black candidate, he still has to beat out all the other candidates to get the job. And if he can do that, every team in the league would hire him.

they obviously don't, which makes it a ripe canvass for the "institutional racism" talk, especially with the discrepancies in race in coordinator positions. that's why EB is such a lightning rod, b/c he's the unicorn black OC but was passed over again. it's going to pick up steam in a couple years with leftwich, too
i mean hell it was just a weird year on the coaching carousel. Daboll was the clear cut #1 guy to me and he didn't get HC job either

Hiring the most qualified candidate is such outdated, racist thinking. I mean, a bad hire can only set your billion dollar franchise back a decade. Just roll the dice so everyone sleeps better at night

The entire issue is about power. Not diversity.
IF the guy is good enough, he will get a job. If not, he wont. Everything can be racist if you want it to be

Tomlin inherited a pretty good situation
Cowher left that team in good shape
You had a franchise QB already in place
The defensive staff stayed intact during the transition as well
If he got the Jets job he wouldn't have lasted 3 years

Maybe not consciously, but subconsciously in some instances, go after those who has prior connections to the franchise, or whatever. That is more likely to inadvertently freeze black candidates out of opportunities.

frick it. Give them everything. Any job position that opens up HAS TO BE REFUSED by every single African American before some whitey can just stroll into that office flexing all his privileges
I’m so fricking sick of this shite

yeah i mean there are some issues involved. it may not be "racism" but the whole "the best guy gets the job" narrative doesn't fully fit perfectly.
