The reason they went “back” to this format was to reward teams and make divisions important again because 99.9% complained divisions were not being rewarded. I like this system.

This format blows because only the division winners benefit. 2nd place finishers in a tough division like Jets then have to pay a steep price playing the best team in the conference in the semifinals.

This at least prevents that with the WC. You’re supposed to win your division. If you’re good enough you got to beat them anyway.

I hate that part of it too, there is a reason all the other playoffs went to a reseed format so what does the NHL do? The opposite. Classic NHL.

Then they went straight 1-8 even worse. Then they gave the division winners 1 and 2 then went records.
I like this way as it incorporates tradition and 1-8. But we all know a hot goalie can screw up a run for any top seed (ask Washington)
Irbe stole the series vs Detroit then had to play the 2 seed
Halak did it to Washington and played a 4
Giguere went to a Cup as a 7 or 8

Yeah but now people know, and like/prefer the NBA format. The NBA and it's playoffs are soaring as a result, doing what the NHL needs to be doing but isn't. Instead they have games on the fricking Golf Channel.
