It's certainly a distraction. As others have said, the older I get the less I'm invested in whether my teams perform well or not. It's more about a love for the game itself which brings enjoyment for me.

Having sports knowledge gives you a non-controversial topic that you can talk to most men about.

I’ve told my friends when I was in my early 20’s that I like sports fandom for the social aspect of it. Hanging out with friends at the bar, bs’ing via text, going to a game with another couple, etc…

That doesn’t mean that I don’t follow sports closely, but I don’t let it bother me if “my team” doesn’t win.

quote:

I'll watch sports, but I'm no longer invested. Definitely not watching or listening to sports talk shows. A lot of sports have been completely ruined:

College sports: NIL
NBA: no one cares about the regular season; players are extremely unlikable
MLB: no salary cap
NFL: too many commercials, too many flags, and rule changes suck balls

As a man in his mid 40's with kids, this is me

Sports has moved to a background topic rather than appointment viewing. Of course I'm still interested, but not nearly to the extent I was when I was in my 20's

I’m getting married in a few months, no kids. Most of the best moments of my life so far have been around sporting events. The feeling celebrating the Saints Super Bowl with my family will literally never leave me. If I get dementia one day, I wouldn’t be shocked if I forget my kids names but not watching that game with my grandpa.

Watching sports will never be the same for me after enjoying the Saints' post-Katrina Super Bowl Run with Brees and Payton AND LSU' s perfect season under Burrow and Coach O.

Both of our local football teams experienced dream seasons with likeable stars and coaches that will never be eclipsed. Everything else will fall short, from here on out. That's just the way that it is.

I feel like both major Louisiana teams had what's akin to "series finales" in television terms. It's all just reboots, now.
