Sports Writer David Climer admits not Voting for best Athlete for Heisman
Posted by TenTex on 1/18/13 at 8:11 am00
tennessean
I lost interest in the Heisman vote a few years ago because the best athlete does not always get voted as the Heisman winner. It's more about the Club now instead of the award. So I was surprised to see David Climer of the Tennessean admit he voted for Te’o over Manziel based on the Te'o story losing his Grandmother and Girl Friend. But what can we expect from writers who write stories?
quote:
I was duped along with just about everybody else. When it came down to choosing between Te’o and Johnny Manziel for the No. 1 spot on my Heisman Trophy ballot, I weighed everything and went with Te’o.
While the award is supposed to be based on football performance, there’s no question the story of how Te’o had coped with the loss of his grandmother and girlfriend played a role in my vote.
I wished I could have gotten the ballot back after the bowl games. Now I would shred the darn thing.

the Heisman hasn't meant something for some time now. It's unfortunate, because some great players have hoisted that trophy

It seems wrong but predictable in this society. I mean, people literally vote for President based on the opinions of actors.

It is really pathetic. The media is ruining sports.

Ingram shouldn't have won it, but its a media driven award.

+1,000,0000. And ESPN is the biggest culprit.

I've heard three different guys say this now.

Just listen to how they talk about it. There used to be unspoken biases that crept into voters' minds, but now they talk all season long about these things as if they are fact. Collin Klein was a top 2 candidate and this his TEAM loses one game and he's all of the sudden a chump. That was one game where his defense gave up 50+ points (or something like that). So Collin Klein can win the Heisman if his team is undefeated, but if they lose a game he has no shot.
I'm not a Collin Klein fan, just pointing out the idiocracy in the Heisman voters. The very best player in the nation didn't win a single award this year. If Jadeaveon Clowney was elgible for the NFL draft, every single NFL team would draft him first. But because he doesn't meet the stupid criteria by numbnut voters, he doesn't win the big awards.

Andre Ware adn a couple of other voters have also admitted this...they need to have their votes stipped

anyone who admits this should have their vote yanked.
but wait a month, that way all who plan on admitting it will admit it.

Political Board???
So, Rush Limbaugh stated several years ago that the media sometimes props a player up to being better than they actually are because it would make for a great story of overcoming adversity.
Hmmmm, looks like Rush was right.

I unfortunately listened to about 3 minutes of Clay Travis running his mouth about the Te'o stuff yesterday. Travis was just a gossip hound repeating all the gossip found on boards like these as possible fact. If I want Breaking Internet gossip I can find it here! I expect factual reporting from so called media sports shows.
But I guess that's my fail expecting factual reporting.

It's so stupid, kids have gone through so much more and not gotten Heisman hype because of it. I agree that anyone who admits it should have their vote taken away.
ETA: not to mention his numbers weren't even impressive. He shouldn't have even been invited to NYC.

He's Clay Travis, not Dick Schapp (sp). He does a radio show for entertainment. Yes, that IS your fail for expecting factual reporting.

Exactly why I was for Manziel all along. The off the field stuff should not factor in this award.
Imagine this story had he won the heisman.

Yes, I'm guessing the Heisman Club is breathing a sigh of relief! It would have been a well deserved nightmare for them!

People still care about the Heisman?
re: Sports Writer David Climer admits not Voting for best Athlete for HeismanPosted by TiGeRTeRRoR on 1/18/13 at 8:50 am to SouljaBreauxTellEm
After Charles Woodson over Peyton and Jason White over Larry Fitzgerald, the award really has become way less prestigious.

I wish he would have, then the voters would have to live with their stupid decision.

7 interceptions, man. 7 interceptions.
Let's totally ignore that 5 of those were either tipped by teammates or the opponents batted the ball in the air on their own.
