Paying big money for WNBA trading cards is like playing musical chairs except that the last chairs get removed with multiple people still in the game.

So blatant the WNBA/NBA/officially licensed card manufacturers might as well be publishing trade secrets.

1. Print “exclusive and desirable cards”, keep them in house and never include in retail packs

2. Sell packs with shitty, common cards to the recreational market aka target children with what is effectively gambling

3. Artificially inflate value of 1 via manipulation, you have all the cards so set the market via insider deals, in order to garner “investor/collector” interest while ascertaining highest demand price

4. Sell “high value” cards anonymously online/in affiliate stores to the idiots from step 4

5. Once market is saturated at peak price, gradually tank market by listing same cards at lower points to tap into those consumers as well

6. Rinse repeat at every point that’s profitable

7. Obfuscate public awareness on realities of trading cards and prevent 3rd party traders from cratering price floor via setting artificial buy limit orders in every relevant market

Aren’t all the high priced cards this way? I saw that somebody paid 200k for a Jayden Daniels card and sold it for 500k the same day or something like that. And the skenes card was like a million. Most of these newer collectors are just flippers, I always wonder who is going to get stuck with these expensive cards when people come to their senses. And they come out with variations of the same card and new ones every year . Definitely doesn’t seem like sustainable values.

Sports Card Investor

Massive douche bag

Spending that kind of money on WNBA cards is akin to taking the same amount of money out of your bank account, wiping your arse with it, and lighting it on fire.

You're certainly correct about the cards being overpriced, but there's at least a historical market for men's sports cards, especially baseball (the older, rarer ones).

Regardless of the gender, cards are so mass produced these days that it's hard to believe there's any significant value to any of them. The exception would be some major and rare printing error or the card itself was very limited in production.

That's why outside of a few random personal collection stuff the pieces I buy are pretty much only guys that are free money. Just cards you can buy and sit and forget and they are only going to go up. Almost never buy new rookies. I remember guys on the Pels board telling people to buy all the Wemby rookies up his rookie year and I just laughed. Just a little while later and now they are worth half of what they were going for.

Jackie Robinson, Tom Brady rookies, MJ, Lebron rookies, Ruth, Mantle, Muhammad Ali. I was fortunate enough to be buying a bunch of Brady rookies and rare 90's MJ inserts prior to the covid boom. Values skyrocketed.

I agree. Glad I’m not in either group.
