Kraft probably bought them on accident. He was trying to call an Uber from the tug shop and hit “buy now” on a soccer team in the haze.

Kraft had a long-term plan to get the team (took him about two decades to pull it off), and turned them from a laughing-stock (that was actually planning to relocate from a major metro area) to a top-tier franchise.
