Since the article didn't mention it... SUNO has mens and womens basketball and track/field, as well as women's volleyball

After months of financial turmoil, Southern University of New Orleans officials have decided to suspend all athletic programs as a cost-saving measure, according to a memo circulated on Tuesday.

Ammons called the decision "mission-centric and data-driven." The suspension will affect 56 student athletes, four head coaches and one assistant coach, he said.

SUNO is a classic example of the teaching and education industry doing what’s best for the employees and not the students.

That should put their athletics on par with their academics.

NAIA institution in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference
that conference consists of
Xavier (NOLA)
Dillard (NOLA)
Edward Waters College (Jacksonville, Fla.)
Rust College (Holly Springs, Miss.)
Philander Smith College (Little Rock, Ark.)
Talladega College (Talladega, Ala.)
Tougaloo College (Tougaloo, Miss.)
an exclusively HBCU conference that wasn't that way 15 years ago

considering SACS is on the verge of pulling SUNO's accreditation...
well let's see if SUNO has any chance of getting its shite straight

Will they be able to do this knowing the cries of racism that they will get hit with?
That university is an absolute mess.

LOL, not happening.
Their only hope would be a state bailout and that would be a tough one since the GOP has supermajorities in both houses IIRC.

My guess is that SACS is able to insulate themselves enough from pressure that they could do this.
What’s SUNO going to do, try and switch to a different accreditation when they can’t meet standards for this one?

By any metric, SUNO is just a massive drain on the states budget. They have used all means possible to keep the school open other than improving quality of education.
With peak graduation rates at 20% It serves no purpose other than providing jobs. It should have been merged with UNO when Jindal tried but they cried racism.
Go look up some stats on SUNO. It’s embarrassing how poor that school performs.
I went down the rabbit hole during the John bel Edwards is going to cancel LSU football arguments on reddit.

SUNO is supposed to be an educational institution, not a political one.

There’s another reason... it provides grants and loans to “students” who live off of them.

SACS don't give a shite
by the way... for those who don't know... SACS is the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools
that's the agency that basically says the school gives an acceptable education and its degrees have value
if SACS pulls its accreditation... it basically says your school is shite and your degrees are worthless

it's all regional... I believe SACS is the only accrediting agency for the south
I could be mistaken though

If they were smart, they would immediately cease to exist as at separate university, and become an additional campus of Southern main campus.
Not that Southern is some great well-run school, but it's better than SUNO.
Otherwise, SUNO can't survive losing its' accreditation, which is why there will be so much pressure on SACS to not let that happen.

Or merge with UNO, allowing the latter to better serve the needs of the city.

That ship sailed during the Jindal years.
At this point, SUNO sinks or swims on its own.

As a proud UNO grad, I say no thanks. No need to drag UNO down to their level.
