The Night race at Daytona is usually packed.
This is the second year that I haven't been able to go to that race.
We used to get some buddies and make a trip to Daytona every 4th. The night races are the best, you have all day to walk around look at the site AKA whores and then watch a race at 200 MPH under the lights.
And you get to bring in your own beer!!

My take, and I'm not a NASCAR fan by any stretch, is that they need to have a big rivalry that the casual sports fan can recognize and try to erase the 'redneck' stigma. The sponsors seem to get the latter part, but they don't seem to embrace the former. How to get there, I don't know. In other sports, rivalries are mostly between (and sometimes within) cities and regions. I'm not sure how to get there with NASCAR. sure, in golf and tennis, you have recognition and rivalries, but casual fans can also enjoy those sports more because they can go out to the course or to the court and participate with relative ease. Most people can't go out, form a team and pit crew, and have a pickup race. No one drove stock cars in HS or college or in a different recreational venue. I think this hurts them, esp. as prices continue to rise. So they have to get creative in marketing and in other areas.

if Dale Jr. can't win at HMS, he can't win anywhere. he has been extremeley overrated his entire career. he may be the most popular driver, but he is middle to bottom of the pack when it comes to racing. i know he is 11th in points now, but it won't last. he'll screw it up somehow.

My problem with NASCAR is that they shove Junior down our throats because he's the "fan favorite," even though he's irrelevant on the racetrack. They stop everything every 3 minutes to give us a "Junior Update," which is usually something like "Junior has moved up from 24th to 21st."
And now DANICA MANIA! She can't even finish a freaking race, and she's their central marketing figure, at least for the Saturday races. She makes Dale Earnhardt Jr. look like Richard Petty.

Yeah, they need to quit anointing people the next big thing and let it develop.
Stop with the gimmicks and stick to people who produce. Sell their stories and promote their rivalries with other drivers.

Dega needs to put lights in and have a night race, would be frickin awesome. I wish they would go to the friday/saturday races so I didn't have to take both friday and monday off work

Helton and crew try to dampen rivalries. Let two drivers get mad at each other and its off to the trailer.

They already have 100k+ paying fans just because they are down from the 200+ they use to have it still tops baseball, football, basketball, and hockey.

If any other sport was at 50% capacity or saw its attendance drop off that much, you'd be saying that sport is in serious trouble.

After hearing friends and family talk about how much money one of these weekend events cost I can understand why they are at 50% capacity.
I do not think they are in serious trouble, I think they are over stretching their means, they could cut back the number of races and still make a profit. They are making a profit now, just not as large of one.

They have NHL disease. They took away races in the South and other core regions to make it a "national" sport.
They were talking about making a track on Staten Island, for God's sake. Whatever became of that?

It has become a year round sport, they need to shorten it up. Keep the core tracks that fans can identify with and get rid of the Chase for the Cup.

The death of Dale Sr. was like severing a limb or two to NASCAR. Then they went to the Chase, cutting off a couple more limbs. They finally decapitated and drove off the last of the die hard base of their fans when they started censoring drivers and wouldn't let them mouth off and say what they thought. NASCAR went PC to get more tv viewers, and in the process, destroyed what built NASCAR to get them there. Good ole boys > soccer mom and dads, as far as their loyalty to the sport and they pissed them off too much and drove them away.
