Because he has never been an elite QB. He is a compiler who had two incredible playoff runs.

Look, I've already acknowledged he is in, but it is an injustice IMO - not because it belittles the HOF, but because many of his peers who were much better QBs will be left out.

I think he also holds the record for road playoff wins by a qb. Impressive. A hof lock. And a pretty decent overall qb. Btw I am not that worried about regular season stats. He has been proven to be better in the playoffs than his brother who is considered the best regular season qb ever.

like who?

You can always vote them in too. He doesn't take their spot.

Do you have a reason besides this?

Robert Horry belongs in the hall of fame. Almost every argument you just made for Eli applies to Horry.

Football is the ultimate team sport. No other sport relies team work more. It is absurd how much credit people want to give to a single player. I can't take anyone's argument seriously who doesn't recognize this.

Mike Vrabel and Teddy Bruschi both were productive for many years and won even more super bowls than Eli. They were even huge parts of those super bowl teams. They belong in the Hall of Fame too, right?

It's the hall of fame. Not the hall of very good and happened to be in the right place at the right time.

True.

Romo and Rivers are two QBs that immediately come to mind who are better QBs than Eli but will probably struggle to get in, if at all.

Hell, even someone like Carson Palmer has been a better QB than Eli for long stretches.

Being the starting quarterback on a football team is a totally different universe than being the 6th man rangey power forward on a basketball team

Rivers is basically John Elway right now. He needs SB's to be a lock.

No one with any credibility says that Peyton shouldn't get in. In fact you are the first person I have ever seen say that. I have seen people say that he isn't the GOAT because he only has 1 super bowl. But I have never seen anyone say he doesn't deserve to be in the hall.

Change "mediocre" to "consistently solid but not spectacular"

I will agree to change "mediocre" to "oftentimes mediocre but sometimes good."

The fact that he has never been elite, in any season, should kill his HOF chances, IMO.

Not much use arguing it anymore. Each side is sticking to their guns.

Side HOF: Accumulated stats and 2 SBs.

Side non-HOF: Never been elite. Never been among the best.

Eli Manning

at any point in his career has he been amongst the best or best at the position? Not at all.

In his era:
Brady better
Rodgers better
Brees better
Peyton better

He's not even in the top of his era.

He shouldn't be in.

Roethlisberger is getting in too.

eta: i think he might've had a year or two as one of the best statistical qb's during the regular season so that makes it ok

Deserves?

This is my problem with Eli - if you're going to put him in, it should open the door for a plethora of good QBs from his era.

For instance, if Eli is in, Rivers is in, right?

Rivers has zero playoff success. Eli got Coughlin and Gilbride a super bowl ring.

Super Bowls matter. New York Super Bowls count! Not saying the New York angle is right, but it exists. And the Manning legacy storyline is just too storybook for the NFL to pass up. Tear filled pics of Archie and Mrs. Archie while each gives speach. Shot of each brother full of pride at the others speech.

You can punch holes in those reasons, but not his numbers and his rings. He will have both when he retires. And if he can scrape up another deep playoff run before he retires? It is only gravy. Like Peyton. They shite the bed in their Super Bowl but he drug Denver back for 3 seasons or so of greatness. Those numbers are just gravy.

Elway had worse stats and was an even bigger choker

Until the Super Bowls

A bigger choker???? He took the Broncos to the SB in his third ,4th and 6th year in the league and had about the same talent as Rivers has had......Just look at those 1st three teams that Elway took to the Sb's...It was amazing what he did... Rivers is a real good QB...But IN NO WAY is he in Elways class...........

When talking stats I think you have to factor inflation into the equation with modern QBs.

If stats are paramount, Matt Stafford will be into the HOF in 10 years

I assume the HOF committee will take that into consideration, but who knows...

Take away the SBs and Rivers stacked up better against his peers than Elway did against his.

In home playoff games Eli is 0-3 with 443 yards passing, 2 TDs, 6 INTs, and 41 of 74 and a 48.3 passer rating.

HOF baby.
