So what would they have preferred? It kept Texas and OU and 2-3 others from going to a conference that ESPN has no rights in, i.e. the Pac 12.

Their attempt to create a loophole (the UIL being located in Austin) as a means of broadcasting high school football games to try to both circumvent the NCAA and to give Texas a recruiting advantage went nuclear in their faces. They also undercut their own negotiating leverage when their next round of negotiations starts (2016 for COMCAST and Dish, 2018 for DirecTV, and 2020 for TWC).

I don't know exactly what they preferred, but I'm confident they didn't want Texas boxed into the Big 12, and only the Big 12.

It is truly funny to hear the Aggie's whine about UT's Network and how it it's such a bad deal when they are still begging for $150k to Light The Letters

quote:

In 1981, through the generosity of Mary Alice & Bob Frymire '45, the illuminated letters on the Kyle Field press box lit up for the first time. These letters served as a beacon in the night to identify Kyle Field.

Many Aggies recall seeing these lights driving in to College Station or flying in to Easterwood airport. Sometime in the mid-nineties, the lights became non-operational and have not been lit since.

We are a non-profit group that wants to see Kyle Field light up the sky again! All donations and proceeds will be used to remove, completely renovate, and reinstall the lights using new LED technology that is easier to maintain and cheaper to operate.

Any extra funds will be endowed into a fund to maintain the operation of the lights. If you would like to see these 18 feet tall, 10 feet wide letters light up the night sky again, we ask for your help in any way you can contribute: be it donations, helping out with the project, or being a corporate sponsor! Every little bit helps!

Please donate a buck so they can fix their lights.

I don't necessarily think all your points (or predictions) are accurate, but let's just agree to disagree.

First, I was incorrect that ESPN has no rights in the Pac 12 - I believe they have some rights but maybe subservient to Fox.

I don't think Texas is truly boxed in to ONLY the Big 12 based on the LHN contract, which, at the end of the day, is just a contract that can be broken and damages paid. Now if the Big 12 goes ahead with the 13 year grant of rights, that's a little different and works more to keep Texas (and all the schools) in that conference.

From my limited understanding ESPN and Fox split first and second tier broadcasting rights to 3-4 Pac-12 games a week. Third tier, replay, and digital rights belong to the Pac-12 Network. Of note the Pac-12 network gets top pick in the "draft" twice so two higher profile games will be on the pac-12 network for example Okie St. @ ASU.

Looks like good news for Longhorn/Big 12 fans.
As of this morning, AT&T U-Verse has now picked up the network.

Attention all aggies with U-verse. Please pay your bills on time! Mack needs a solid gold coffee mug for his office.

I know you are making a joke, but that doesn't even make sense.

UT and Mack are getting paid regardless.

Certainly doesn't make up for everything that's happened so far but adding 600,000 TVs in the State of Texas & 4 Million Nationwide is a pretty good start to what will hopefully be a domino effect over the next few years.

Therein lies the problem. AT&T already charges ridiculous rates for anything outside of your normal local channels. Since they don't offer the PAC 12 in any capacity right now, you'll likely lose a lot of subscribers in the Pacific and Mountain time zones which will more than offset the "gain" of subscribers for the LHN.

AT&T will likely be the last provider you see pick it up in the near future (MAYBE dish).

You forget that ESPN's next round of negotiations don't start until:

2016 - DirecTV
2020 - Time Warner
2022 - Comcast

That is certainly a big fish for the network.

Going through all of my old US addresses since I joined the military:

Augusta - Unavailable
Colorado Springs - Unavailable
Downers Grove - Unavailable
Fort Leavenworth - Unavailable
Fort Bragg - Unavailable

Not likely to affect me anywhere I would be stationed since I wasn't likely to get AT&T anyway.

I am not following you.
U-Verse subscribers on the west coast are suddenly going to drop their service because, there is no PAC-12 channel?
I don't get it.

Doing a double check, U-Verse is only available in certain areas of California. It wouldn't make sense for them to carry the PAC 12 network as they don't have customers in Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, or Utah.

In fact, their customer base is far more limited than I originally thought.

They don't have

Washington DC
Denver
Orlando
Tampa
Boston
New York
Las Vegas
Phoenix
Seattle
Salt Lake City
Portland

So if "nationwide distribution" was their goal, they got the most limited one possible. In fact, Verizon FIOS only carries it in Texas, so the network is pretty much limited to Texas...as it should be.

It's expanding rapidly but U-verse will only ever be offered in the AT&T landline footprint. Which, out west, only includes Cali and Nevada.

Large Scale Negotiations aren't necessary when the chip at play is just one channel. TWC, Suddenlink, DTV, etc are constantly negotiating terms/implementations of new channels every single day. And I guarantee you we'll have at least 2-3 more big fish before 2016.
