there is no point in going 8-8 and missing the playoffs. You’re worse off than if you went 0-16. No coach wants to be the 0-16 guy but I think everyone would take a first overall pic.

a coach wouldn't mind being 0-16 THAT much... they get paid handsomely and can blame it on shitty players

it's the FANS who hate being 0-16. they have to pay in time or money to keep track of such a crappy team and can't do anything about it.

an 8-8 team that misses the playoffs could have usually made it (if they didn't) if they had went on a run in the second half of the season. they usually have had success either in the near future or the recent past, or if not, 8-8 will feel like success. they're nowhere near the worst team, so they probably have someone fun to watch

Give them the number 1 pick then. On the outside looking in, might need that one more player to make the next level. Maybe it forces all of the other teams to attempt to win all of the games or spend more money in the offseason. Gives incentives for winning.

its really not a big deal in the NFL, its fun to talk about and if you are a fan of a team that's bad its a silver lining but its also grossly overrated, you can rebuild a team no matter where you pick in the NFL. Look at the QBs for these final 8 teams and we can leave out Brady the mother of all exceptions

Mahomes was pick 10, Allen was the 3rd QB drafted his draft, Jackson was the 5th in the same draft and him and Brees were the 32nd pick. Rodgers was picked 23. Only Mayfield of the remaining teams went #1 and that surprised many.

They just need to improve the formula for selecting the draft order.

It's a complicated problem but I know they can do better than simply lining up the teams by record, because all games are not equal.

Games played while teams are still playoff eligible need to count the most, those are when both teams are trying their hardest. Those need to be weighted the most.

Lakers would get first choice on who they wanted every year

Yea, if you ever ditched the draft you couldn't have a special draft budget for every team to slot rookies into.

It would need to just go into regular cap space. If you did something like got rid of max contracts and set a hard cap, then ditching the draft in theory could work because a team like the Lakers wouldn't just automatically get the best players because you imagine they're going to be a stacked squad with very little cap space, and the lesser or small market teams would have the cap space to give the better rookies, generally speaking of course.
