Exactly this would bump up the average player salary but you wouldn't see 300-400 million for one player

That isn't really the argument though. The question at hand is whether or not the players should agree, and I think that answer is clear.

As for baseball itself, the lack of a cap actually makes small maerkoteams more competitive IMO. If you want Harper, you can have him if you pay enough. That isn't the case in the NBA or the NFL.

The average player makes over 4 million, same as basketball, and a lot more than the 1.9 average of the NFL player

They'd make even more if the cap was tied to a percentage of revenue.

The average nba player makes well over 5 million per year and that gap is about to grow a lot once the new tv money comes in

That number gets skewed heavily because of all the 10 day contracts and stuff. I remember back in the 2011 lockout, everybody said players made 5 million on average and the cap has only gone up but i might be wrong and the point is that nba players are guaranteed a % of the revenue which comes out at 50 while mlb players aren't guaranteed a % and its around 43

A higher percentage of revenue makes that average go up, but more importantly, a cap makes the median salary go up. That is why players vote for a cap. It benefits the herd but drags down the elite.

Luxury tax punishes high salary teams but they can't force teams to spend money on payroll, its ridiculous that a sport which made 9.5 billion in revenue and local tv contracts for teams that go into 9 figures yearly has teams spending less than 75 million in salary

Which is why everyone should root against the Pirates, these assholes for decades were getting Luxury tax cash and giving to the brass as bonuses. They finally got threatened, and now i believe they have rules, but they were the biggest abuser of tax money. frick them

it could be 40mil next year, if Loria gets an itch and team is losing.

He is the worst owner, even worse than Kroenke.

You act like all the teams have these insane tv deals. The teams you are complaining about don't. While a good number of teams have those close to 100 mil a year type tv deals, many teams don't. The Braves and Marlins for example are stuck with horrible tv deals for the forseeable future, and there would be no way to realistically push the salary floor past 90-100 mil or so because of those teams that signed deals in the early 2000s and are stuck with crappy deals.

And I'm not saying the Marlins don't suck, they do and Loria is horrible. I wouldn't mind seeing a salary floor of some sort because of them, but I think forcing teams to spend money on garbage players to meet a floor during rebuilding years is dumb as well.

Yeah the Braves deal is absolute shite and one of the main reasons they moved up to Cobb.

For people wanting to say that only the major markets win - Kansas City just won with the 16th highest payroll, or exactly in the middle. They beat the 2nd lowest team (Astros) to get to the ALCS, who beat the 2nd highest (Yankees). In the ALCS the Royals beat the 10th highest payroll, then beat the 11th LOWEST payroll in the World Series.

LOL Salary Cap. Last year was a beautiful example as to why it doesn't need it.

if the players were smart they'd be standing in line demanding a salary cap tied to revenues. the problem is the same problem in basketball where the stars are grossly underpaid

the NBA could solve this issue by making one contract per team "off the cap"
