Yadi Molina, you have lived in America for over a decade. I should not have to read subtitles of your interviews.

If someone who only spoke spanish could bring a lot of money into your business, would you tell them to frick off, or would you be willing to listen through an interpreter? Play the hand your dealt, smile, and STFU. Anything else is some weird hard line stance that just comes off as racist.

His job is to play baseball. Not cater to old white xenophobs like you. Why don't you learn Spanish if subtitles bother you that much Trump fan?

Not really, he could understand the language and speak in the language but giving an interview would be a lot different, especially as an athlete.

No but it is ridiculous some of these guys that have been here for 10+ years can't answer questions in an interview in English.
They can they just don't want to

Once again, they probably understand the language but not well enough to give an interview.

I lived in a foreign country for 9 months and was nearly fluent by the time I left despite not knowing a word prior to arriving.

After years in a place, it takes more effort to not learn it, so I don't buy that line of thinking.

Bingo...any lack of English speaking amounts to just personal inconveniences...you can't legislate that. That would be like trying to pass a law to enforce blinker usage among drivers....you can pass the law, but it doesn't mean any change is going to happen.

I'm fine with a multi-lingual population. America is lazy with our language-teaching. Learning a new language doesn't make you weak, it makes you more awesome. Just imagine going into a taqueria with your girl. You order in perfect, or better yet casual spanish, not showing off or anything...and maybe make a joke to the counter person...you both laugh...Then you turn back to your girl and just shrug it off....that's guaranteed sex that night.

That would not fly in France.

They'd probably shun you then no matter how good you were.

You know other languages were spoken on this land before English was brought over by settlers, right? Spanish is not going to overtake English here, anyway. That's ludicrous. So dump that hot take back into the trash can you pulled it out of.

You don't realize how many people are sheltered from other cultures, even in California. Trust me, I grew up in one of the biggest cultural melting pots in the world, and I had tons of co-workers that had never eaten at a low down taqueria...or even sushi. Many people just stick within their comfort zones. It's fun to look cool to them, even though I'm just an average Joe.

You kind of lose that excuse when you live in a nation for 8 months a year for over 5 years.

There's a reason it's a lot easier to learn a second/third language as a child then it is as an adult. And there's a lot of science to back that up. Especially if you're in a household that still speaks your primary language on a regular basis.

I watched a documentary on YouTube about Roberto Clemente and even though his English sounded very broken by his deep Puerto Rican accent he actually spoke excellent English but that was a different time when they tried to be more liked and respected by the fans and the media. Nowadays that's not needed and if a player isn't comfortable speaking English so be it.

Once again, I'm not saying they don't understand the English language, just that they are probably more comfortable giving interviews in their native language. And I don't see the issue

Yadi, as an example, has played ball in US since 2001.

Dude has lived in US for nearly half his life.

Glad to see how any pro-English talk is seen as bigoted.

Cricket does this right. All players, interviewers and reporters are expected to conduct interviews in English primarily. Even players from countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and some players who come from rural parts of India where they don't speak English, try and do their best to speak in English....sometimes it is broken with bad grammar, but still you get what they are trying to say. Even if one of the reporters tries to ask a question in the local language, they reply in English keeping the global audience in mind. Usually players from Asia do separate interviews for the local language TV/news agencies. But in front of the camera right after a game or during the main press conference, everyone speaks English.

There's been maybe one or two that have called it that in this thread. The rest of us just think it's a silly thing to bitch about.

Does it bother you to have someone interpret for a hearing impaired person if they can hear enough to speak but it sounds like they're gargling water in an interview? Technically they could give an interview without an interpreter but isn't exactly comfortable.
