Yes or No?

Manfred had a chance to overturn the ruling on him a few years ago and didn't.

An all time great who was innocent imo. He belongs in the Hall

No, cheater and a racist. If the hit king will never be let in, Jackson shouldn't be either.

Yes he does. That shite happened almost a hundred years ago. Give that guy the recognition he deserves.

I would love to see Pete Rose get in, too but he can't shut the hell up long enough for the writers to have a chance to let it slide.

If Bonds and the rest of the Dopers get in then I think we start seeing the likes of Shoeless Joe and Pete Rose get in.

Why should he not be?

Although all I know is from Field of Dreams.

He had a World Series-leading .375 batting average, including the series’ only home run.

He threw out five baserunners and handled 30 chances in the outfield with no errors.

Statistics also show that in the games that the White Sox lost, five of Jackson’s at-bats came with a man in scoring position, and he advanced the runners twice.

No. He accepted a bribe. Jesus, stop watching field of dreams. I know it's the hip position to take but dude agreed to help throw a world series.

It's well known he was embarrassingly illiterate and likely didn't realize he signed a waiver of immunity before the grand jury hearing. Even his reported testimony of the fix and the kid crying "say it ain't so, Joe" are more myth than documented fact. His damn teammates said he didn't do anything.

I should excuse my bias as a Sox fan, but he belongs in.

And Landis...for baseball

And Avery Brundage for the Olympics...

Are known historical assholes.

No, he admitted to taking money to lose a World Series game.

And Charles Comiskey, who volunteered his legal counsel to represent Jackson, even though Comiskey was on Landis's side.

The Black Sox moniker also was borne by Comiskey's refusal to launder the players' uniforms, not the scandal itself.

So maybe he took the money - and he probably did.

Owners were cheap bastards back then.

But the stats don't lie.

There's no evidence he was in on throwing games during the World Series. If he was, he sucked at it.

Babe Ruth said of Shoeless Joe, “I copied Jackson’s style because I thought he was the greatest hitter I had ever seen, the greatest natural hitter I ever saw. He’s the guy who made me a hitter.”

I mean, c'mon? This guy isn't in the Hall? Over a very shady case in a very shady era with very shady owners.

And that's the thing, there was so much corruption back then and Jackson's involvement is still debated. Like you said, if he was in on the fix, he sucked.

There's an affidavit and a book about the Cubs throwing the 1918 series and sharing the idea with the Sox. The 1919 White Sox aren't a uniquely rogue team of that era.

Sports has always been shady.

Why this situation was held up as an anathema is beyond me - except that baseball was the most popular sport at the time - and baseball had to make it legitimate and make an example.

Compared to boxing and later football when nobody seemed to know or care how corrupt it was.
