Everyone should go get and echo an ekg and do the same for your kids

Completely worth the couple hundred dollars

I think EKG and echo for every kid would be a big waste of resources. See if kid has family history or symptoms first.

Everyone should get an EKG. Nothing more tragic than seeing a loved one die unexpectedly over something so simple that could be detected

Every person is unique though. Could be the first one in the family with heart issues because of something that happened while they were still developing in the womb, totally unrelated to family history.

Id rather be safe than sorry but that's just me

Was an easy $400 for me to spend. What resources did it waste?

99.9% of the time there won’t be symptoms either

EKG definitely won’t show everything. EKG and echo gives you the full picture

quite simply, no

an EKG is a snapshot of your heart's electrical rhythm. has nothing to do with what happened 20 years ago (although it helps to have previous EKGs to compare)

an EKG helps determine whether your heart is beating normally (sinus rhythm vs A-fib, etc), a normal rate (60-100 bpm, lower if you're an athlete), whether or not there are any blocks (right/left bundle branch). also shows any potential ischemic sections, and whether a person has hyperkalemia (too much potassium in body, can cause a lot of issues)

an EKG is totally harmless, takes 30 seconds if the patient can be still, has no radiation, and tells us a lot about the patient

It's great that they caught it. Think of the players in the past like Hank Gathers who could have been saved with the technology we have now.

But if he had an idiopathic tachycardia would that show up on any test?

Really depends, usually EKGs catch irregular heart beats, but sometimes tachycardias can happen in episodes that don’t happen in the 10 seconds and EKG is scanning
Those would have to be caught with a monitor worn over a certain period of time

I do a lot of physicals. An EKG has always been incorporated as part of it regardless of age... especially sports physicals. Now as far as echoes are concerned, those typically aren't ordered unless something shows up on the EKG or the patient presents with symptoms warranting one. It's easy to say everyone should have an EKG and echo, but the majority of the population don't have the disposable income to just spend 3-4 hundred bucks. It's a nice thought though.

There are dozens of diseases and conditions that you have a very low chance of having, but that you could be tested for for a few hundred dollars each. By your logic you should go get screened for pancreatic cancer, arbitrarily have an MRI done, or blood work, or a skin map. Each one of those would have the same protective effect on your life. So why the EKG and not those?

An EKG is relatively much cheaper than..

for starters.

To confirm the presence or absence of pancreatic cancer you would need to do a biopsy through an endoscopic procedure which just wouldn't be as practical or easy compared to an EKG

Should it be a part of routine checkups and included in the bundle of services for insurance purposes? A couple hundred bucks is still a couple hundred bucks and how many other things would fall into the "it's worth it" category?
