That last part will come across poorly to most people, but I do agree that people aren't cutting the cord because they disagree with ESPN's politics.

You would be wrong. Most people have only a few channels they watch. if the cable costs $100 / month and 25% of the channel lineup is now garbage, then $100 begins to look like a waste.

This is a significant contributor. More importantly, it's causing tons of people that don't cut the cord to just change the channel.

ESPN is getting crushed right now. The fact someone like SVP is asked about this and even comments on it is testament that it's happening.

You don't ask the people on the Titanic "What's happening to the ship?", they're too busy jumping, drowning, or re-arranging the deck chairs.

So...what exactly is dumb about avoiding a product that you dislike? And why is reading books by candlelight the only alternative to watching espn and nfl?

I love how ESPN is actively trying to go out of business

SVP sounds like someone who has gotten tired of being asked these kind of questions.

C'mon, dude. You're not getting rid of cable because of ESPN's hot take shows. You watch it for games. They're not bringing back Sportscenter 20 hours per day on the mothership because they have multiple channels for highlights and people are getting those on the internet.

People are still going to watch ESPN on Saturday night for LSU/Tenn as long as they have that game. They're probably doing that by using Granny's comcast password or watching at the bar, which is why subscriptions are down. Now, if you want to talk about how a specific show's rating suck like SC6, go for it.

Nah. People are cutting the cord due to costs. Pretty simple. ESPN could have the same programming the had in the 1990s and the lost viewers would still be staggering.

I’d have kept cable if ESPN didn’t blow arse, tbh.

SVP sounds like he needs a safe space.

God I wish more people on this board shared this opinion. I will say there’s more that share this mindset in here than in the Poli Board

Yep, he hit the nail on the head with that post.

however...it does make my decision easier. When I originally got my cable subscription, we got the package we did based upon which one had ESPN. The majority of the time, ESPN programs are covering social issues they have no business covering

This.
Maybe people won't cut the cord just because of ESPN, but they won't KEEP the cord just because losing it would mean losing ESPN.
People generally build their cable package based on one of two things: premium movie channels, or sports. Now there are other avenues people can take for movies/premium content. And ESPN may no longer be a reason for them to keep cable, whereas it was prior to their liberalization.

ESPN needs to focus on login sharers and illegal streamers. Shut those down and people will come crawling back.
