I don't know. These umpires are pro's. The do this every day and this is their living.

I can't say what really happened here.... or that Max was for sure cheating.

BUT - these umpires see it all. They're doing this everyday and they felt, as a crew, that this was a foreign substance. They wouldn't have tossed him from the game if they didn't really feel this way.

They know what's at stake.

And add to that, that he's not appealing the suspension. That's interesting. It's hard to listen to him be so adamant in the locker after the game and declare his innocence on his children's lives and yet not want his day in court.

My question is how is Scherzer’s sweat stickier when added to rosin than any other player?

I think he’s been cheating for a while and not he got caught.

I heard yesterday that his spin rates have been up a good bit this year. Also, the only approved rosin is the one on the bag behind the mound. Scherzer was apparently using rosin in the dugout.

It was very telling that Buck didn't even get thrown out trying to defend him.

He knew....

That’s a stretch. He gets tossed and risks a longer suspension depending on his actions and now the Mets are without him and Scherzer.

As the rule is written now, there’s way too much room for interpretation. I think it was Yokahoma Baystar ace Trevor Bauer that pointed this out last year. He correctly predicted the rule would be impossible to enforce equally because it’s subjective.

I know a lot of rules that hit that category. Being subjective doesn't mean they aren't effective in combating cheating. I don't think MLB believe they are going to eliminate players trying to get the advantage but stuff like this makes pitchers think twice about becoming the next Gaylord Perry.

True, but in every other league there’s a way for teams to challenge a ruling in real time. Baseball only allows for safe or out and home run reviews I believe. I don’t know what the solution is, but some slap dick umpire deciding to toss a guy because “it was too sticky” by his estimation isn’t the way.

They didn't just throw him out with no recourse. They told him to wash his hands and he had to change his glove. That's what they also told Domingo Herman of the Yankees. Wash your hands.

With Scherzer, it got even stickier. Then he was gone. Frankly, I was surprised that Herman and Scherzer got that much of a second chance to stay in the game after they originally checked.

This is my point. Either you’re in violation or you’re not. One umpire was satisfied after a hand washing and the other decided to toss the pitcher. German and Scherzer could have been equally as sticky for all we know. It’s all based on the interpretation of the umpire.

Why would Scherzer's hand be even more sticky after he washed it?

Were they actually more sticky? I know that’s what the ump said, but we don’t really know that they were.

Maybe Scherzer just doesn’t know how to wash his hands

You toss around melt way too frequently for a guy who has only been here since 2020.

Allegedly.

Link me the rule about stickiness levels and how that’s determined.

Link me to the rules that says that "resin" is not illegal.

However, despite these updated guidelines, the resin bag is still legal for pitchers. The reason is that the resin powder on your fingers differs from a foreign sticky substance.

Again, he has to use the rosin bag on the mound. Supposedly he was using a different one in the dugout that was not approved beforehand.
