It’s easy to make plays work when the defense is a step slower and smaller at most positions and you have elite talent.

Their defense was awful. Clemson and Bama had a lot of talent too, it's about how that talent performs.
Their defense gave up 51 and nearly lost to Maryland. 5-7 Maryland! 49 to Purdue. That doesn't deserve consideration over an undefeated Notre Dame that played a good schedule.
