S.M.G. did not want to hire a third shift of employees for the Arena. Pure and simple.
Wife and I are still smarting from that decision, although it was likely a blessing to not have season tickets while paying tuition. We could do it again, now, though.

It's time for the NHL to admit that while overall southern expansion has been a success, Phoenix is a dead market. Look, most of it is because of how bad the team has been, but the Coyotes simply never took root.
The NHL is notorious for not performing due diligence on their ownership groups. They've gotten better with the last several purchasers, but Phoenix has never had a worthwhile ownership group, Atlanta had possibly the worst owners in professional sports history, the Islanders were once bought by a guy who literally didn't have any money, the Lightning were once owned by a Japanese investment firm, and Nashville had one shitty group (and almost a relocation) before they became the league cornerstone that they are today. Phoenix is a fine market, just like Atlanta, but the series of retards that they've had as owners has poisoned the well there. When they pull up stakes, it won't be because the market failed, but just like Atlanta, because the league failed the market.
I love the game, but the NHL, and Bill Daly in particular, are complete amateur hour.

The NHL will never admit it, but they don’t want another Canadian franchise. Especially in a French speaking city.
So I’m not optimistic Quebec will get a team, even though it would be nice.

San Antonio has had minor league hockey for decades. Iguanas, Dragons, and now the Rampage.

Look, most of it is because of how bad the team has been, but the Coyotes simply never took root. I know Quebec is desperate for a team and I wouldn't have a problem with them moving back to Canada, but there is something to be said for a move to Houston or Austin. Give Dallas a local rival.
Honestly, when it was becoming apparent that the NHL was coming here to Vegas, I was sure the the Coyotes would move up from Phoenix. It would have made more sense than what would ultimately become 2 expansion teams but I guess that the $$$ infusion was too good to pass up. Given how things have turned out for VGK, I'm certainly not griping.
Phoenix must be having some major arena issues, as local news reported tonight that there's been a preliminary inquiry into the Suns moving here. I don't expect that to happen for a moment...but I do think that the NBA will eventually find its way to a Las Vegas franchise.
