Why did the Aeros leave?

In 1979 the NHL would only accept 4 of the WHA teams. Aeros lost out to the Hartford Whalers.

Oh, you mean the minor league version? I heard partially due to the then Rockets owner, Les Alexander, being the primary tenant of Toyota Center got to squeeze them for more and more rent. I guess it was a sub-lease type thing? Or maybe he just leaned on the HCSA to keep upping the Aeros rent until they had no choice but to move.

Dude definitely wants to be title winning owner.

Given his Rockets roster, probably closer to a Stanley Cup than a Larry O

Laredo, TX has a hockey team in the Central Hockey League. That is just about as Messican as you can get in the USA.

Lots of northerners wintering in Az.

Would be surprised if the NHL moved that team.

Not any longer, they ceased operations because of declining attendance.

Another hockey league's team was going to play at the taxpayer-funded stadium, but it appears that league has canceled its season.

Former Rockets owner wasn’t a fan of sharing arenas, gave them the squeeze, as far as I know

The Rockets previous owner was always meeting with NHL officials about a potential team. This is not new or newsworthy. Tilman Fertitta is more open minded than Les Alexander, but theres still some significant hoops to go through.

When the realigned a few years back it was thought by many that Phoenix would be moving to Houston and Florida would be moving to Quebec.

Let me tell you, every heavy hitter in Quebec is invested in this effort. When the Nordiques left in 95, it took the heart of every Québécois. But hey, I got the Avalanche so tough shite lol.

not only that but constantly fricks people over. Like for instance people construct an entire building for him and then he refuses to pay them and says take me to court.

After taking the GOAT Warriors to the brink last year, he's bored with these regular season Rockets games. Tbt, he's probably just doing this to entertain himself until CC starts their playoff push as the 1 seed in a few months.

It's time for the NHL to admit that while overall southern expansion has been a success, Phoenix is a dead market. Look, most of it is because of how bad the team has been, but the Coyotes simply never took root. I know Quebec is desperate for a team and I wouldn't have a problem with them moving back to Canada, but there is something to be said for a move to Houston or Austin. Give Dallas a local rival.
