Remembering Nebraska QB Brook Berringer

I’ve been watching the ‘94 and ‘95 Orange Bowls, both of which featured Nebraska. Berringer was the backup qb who took over the reigns in ‘94 when Frazier was injured. He also jump started the team in the Orange Bowl against Miami, securing Nebraska’s first title under Osborne.
Those years were my first CFB memories. I actively rooting against NU, mostly because my dad would pull for them. Looking back, Nebraska, FSU, Miami, etc all had their issues.
I remember my dad telling me that Berringer died in a plane crash. In the pre-mainstream internet days, I guess he saw this on TV or read it in the paper.
I was young and naive enough to think those athletes were invincible, that I would grow up to play football, and everybody lived to be old. It’s crazy to think that was over 20 years ago. It’s always sad when anybody gets taken from “us” suddenly, but this one really struck me as a kid.
Such a tragic story.

I wouldn't say that.
They were down 17-9 when Frazier was put back into the game. And he had just thrown a costly interception that would have given Nebraska at least a field goal had it not been thrown. Frazier won Nebraska that game. His fourth quarter heroics earned him MVP honors.

Pretty sad stuff, killed just 3 days before he would have been drafted to the NFL, probably his lifelong dream.

Forgot all about this. I was a little kid then but was a huge Nebraska fan.

You are right. I'm seeing it unfold now.

Pretty much says it all. A nice young man lost before he had time to live his life.

94 and ‘95 Orange Bowls,
I actually just watched the 1994 Orange Bowl on NBC Sports for the first time. That Miami team was loaded with Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp alone. That said, it was funny watching Miami players cheap shot, dance, and bark in Nebraska'a face after every play.
Late in the third quarter, Miami was tired, and Nebraska's 300+ pound line and 260+ fullback was just smashing and wearing their defense's arse out. Nebraska was ripping off 15+ yard runs like it was nothing.
Also, Charlie McBride must be a genius because I'm not too sure that "the U" gained one positive yard the entire second half. Nebraska's defensive line absolutely terrorized their offensive line and Qb. lol:

Osborne took Berringer's death extremely hard.
He only agreed to a statue of himself outside the football stadium if Berringer could be depicted standing beside him.

The rock was on that team too.

The country band Sawyer Brown wrote a song about him. It’s a really good tune.
“The Nebraska Song”

Should've gotten Nebraska to the SEC!

After one play Sapp famously asked Frazier, “Where you been Tommie?” To which Tommie replied, “It’s not where I’ve been, fat boy, it’s where I’m going.”

I remember playing ncaa gamebreaker for the ps1. Sometimes I would bench Frazier and play Berringer to honor him during the season. Same results of annihilation for the other team. Nebraska was a football machine back in the days.
