You wonder how any team can be that consistently inept.
As a long time fan of a rival AFC North team, it's really not surprising how they can be so bad for so long. They literally make every mistake that are hallmarks of losing franchises. Firing coaches quickly, poor talent evaluation, build their roster from skill positions in, rather than the trenches out.
The look to make splash acquisitions rather than building a core of a team.
Watson's deal is killing them as well. A guy that hasn't played in multiple years is costing them nearly $40 million in cap space and will consume an unreal $81 million next year.

I understand how it happened. But in that period they had coaches/GM's including Carmen Policy, Bill Belichick, Mike Holgren, Butch Davis, Eric Mangini...some of whom you think would know better.

How many different owners have they had in that period though?

Shitty organizations make shitty decisions.

Same.
He's grown up.

2...Randy Lerner who was very hands-off and Jimmy Haslam who followed a homeless person's advice to draft Johnny M
EDIT: Actually, Art Modell was owner for the end of the 80's and start of the 90's, so 3 i guess

That's kind of the problem. 12 Head coaches and 10 GMs in 25 years.
As good as some of the individuals have been, there's no such thing as an organizational plan. They can all be great, but none of them have had the ability to steady the organization and set them up to win.
Finally, they've kept a coach for a few years, but have set the team back with ridiculous deals. Now they're in a spot where they have to overpay or target underperforming free-agents, because they aren't at the top of anyones list.

I think it’s also worth pointing out on this Browns franchise trashing that the actual Browns franchise IS in Baltimore now, called the Ravens. Moved to Baltimore after the ‘95 season.
The franchise that had Ozzie Newsome as its GM won two Super Bowls.
So I guess it’s maybe more like the Browns name has just been cursed. What pro football god did the fans in Cleveland, and Ohio in general, piss off?

Daniel Jones succeeding with the Colts after leaving NYG.
Sam Darnold succeeding with the Seahawks after leaving NYJ.
Baker Mayfield succeeding with the Bucs after leaving CLE.
I fully believed Zach Wilson would be the next in line to become a good NFL starter after leaving that trash can organization but I guess the damage was too deep. Damn death sentence to be drafted by those teams.

not disputing the Browns have been difunctional at the QB position forever, but I think Couch would have been a bust regardless. He benefited greatly in college playing in the air raid before people knew how to defend it. He was a system QB without an NFL arm.
here is a pre-draft scouting report for Couch:
quote:
Played in a four- and five-receiver offense in which he generally threw a lot of short passes. System helps build great stats and is somewhat similar to the University of Houston’s run-and-shoot, which hid the shortcomings of Andre Ware and David Klingler from the pros. In the system Couch has played in, they wanted him to throw passes of under 20 yards and very few passes in the 20- to 30-yard range. Thus, he has very little experience throwing those types of passes. Does not have a great John Elway/Dan Marino-type arm. Ball will flutter at times, and he rarely drives the ball, but at times he does show he can drill the ball 20 yards on a line. Needs a lot of work on his deep passing and must adjust to the fact that NFL defensive backs will break on the ball a lot faster than the college players he generally faced. Usually lined up in the shotgun. Only played three years of college ball, and his first year was pretty much a washout. Aside from his freshman year in college, has known nothing but great success and could have a hard time if he goes to a bad team and is thrown to the wolves.

This is very true and sort of underscores the absurdity of pro sports fandom.
The team that I grew up rooting for moved and became a hated divisional rival. The team that I then started following is an entirely new organization with all new people to whom I have no connection. Illogical really.

And yet, it all seems better now than what we have in college athletics with an unregulated "NIL" combined with a no-sit transfer portal.
I find myself these days somehow liking NFL better than college athletics, which used to be completely opposite for me.

I would agree. He was much like Kingler, Wuerffel and Ware in that regard. Of course, those guys also went to horribly managed franchises out the gate as well.

fricking idiots
I honestly do not know how Browns fans have not tried to storm the facility and tie Andrew Berry to a rail and carry him out of town.

Cleveland was the problem. You can tell whena player doesn't actually want to win and just wants money. They sign in Cleveland
