Being a Rays fan weakens his argument even further. In the decade since the luxury tax was implemented, his favorite team has made the World Series, and the Yankees made two or three, winning only one.

The fact that one team can grossly outspend the rest of baseball for 10 years and only win 1 title should be the #1 reason why MLB is great.

Add in the fact that the evil luxury tax is keeping his favorite team sustainable and it becomes even funnier.

This also happens in the NFL, NHL, and I'm pretty sure it's mathematically possible in MLB also.

It's also the #1 reason why it's kind of pointless to watch.

The outcome of any given game is basically a crapshoot... that's why they have to play fifty two thousand games just to figure out which team is probably the best.

And there is no real strategy to it... you can't devise a winning game plan. Throw the ball, hope they don't hit it. Or, if they do hit it, hope it goes toward your guys. Hit the ball and hope it doesn't go toward their guys. And hope that the times you do hit the ball are somewhat bunched together.

And even the times that strategy does come into play are boring. 99% of the time, the best "strategy" for a given situation is known, and it's blatantly obvious what they will try to do. The only part of the game that is remotely strategic is between the pitcher and batter, and that makes baseball basically an individual sport with no teamwork whatsoever.

The entire sport boils down this: there is one interesting dynamic between only 2 players at one time, and the rest of the game is just everyone else going through the motions of doing the only possible thing that should be done in a given situation.

Yeah because the point is to strike out every single batter

that makes baseball basically an individual sport with no teamwork whatsoever.

Explain the 5-4-3 double play

It's sort of like saying that, but I didn't say that. There are dynamics between all players at almost all times in basketball.

That's teamwork so far as it requires multiple players to accomplish. There is no strategy, it's all going through the motions. It's not like when you see a double play you go "damn, that was some mighty fine teamwork!". It's more like those guys have all done the same exact thing one million times, and luckily the batter hit the ball to a location to make it possible. Thanks, batter! And the baserunner can't employ any strategy to prevent it other than running faster or sliding late, which everyone knows he's going to do anyway.

It's all just going through the motions. If you just go through the motions in an actual team sport, even as a superior team, there are countless strategies for an underdog to employ to destroy you.

Right, it's called playing the odds, or "gambling". It's hard to call something a "strategy" when your opponent can see exactly what you're doing, and knows exactly why you're doing it.

The only reason shifts are advantageous is because the entire game is such a crapshoot. Mull over that for a few minutes before dismissing it.

I know, it's strange when someone doesn't share your point of view, isn't it?

I'm not trying to convince you to stop liking baseball. If you like to watch it, then by all means keep doing it. I'm just trying to explain why people like myself aren't particularly entertained by it.
