They are the 5th or 6th best program in the big 10
Which means most years they beat every SEC team not named Kentucky.

Yeah I would have to think so. Otherwise that would be a huge hire. Martin is a hardass and a dickhead but his teams always play hard and he wins

[quote]ONCE in the career of their program. They don't have shite on Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan, or Michigan State IMO. They are the 5th or 6th best program in the big 10 right with Wisconcin and Purdue
lulz, with the right coach and the pipeline in Chicago...it will compete for titles. Also, they have a great practice facility and a rabid fanbase. Plus, they can pay a coach. It is the top job right now!

Illinois has the possibility of tapping into great local resources if they hit the jackpot on one of the premier players in the state, and then bandwagon rolls.
Nebraska must recruit Chicago. Their AD said so. They are doomed.
Tulsa is not in a BCS conference.
Miss State solid
Illinois long shot. has so many good programs ahead of it.
USCe
Tulsa when a great coach comes thru town
Nebraska never happening. NO.

What makes Illinois such a great job?
1) Location - CHICAGO,CHICAGO,CHICAGO. Illinois is a good basketball talent state. They just have to get someone to keep the talent there.
2) Prestige/History - Their successes have been more recent and better than the other programs mentioned.
3) Conference - The Big 10 is a better basketball conference than the SEC & MAC. More money and exposure on the basketball scene.
4) Committment - The school/fans seem more basketball focused than the other schools. I bet they have better facilities too.
5) Pay - Top 20 paid college basketball coaches.
6) Education - Not a huge selling point on the basketball recruits, but Illinois is a somewhat prestigious university.

They also have to compete with Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Marquette in recruiting.
Yes, but it's not like college football where it takes 4 or 5 years to turn around a program. One class can get you on the right track.
Not to mention that it's easier for Illinois to compete with Ohio State, Wisconsin, Purdue, etc. rather than having to fight with every other SEC program to see who will finish second to Kentucky (or Florida when Kentucky is down)
quote:
They have really dropped off the past 4-5 years with the return to power of the Michigans and Indianas of the Big-10
Illinois fall from power actually probably helped Indiana and Michigan return to power.

Problem is UK, Duke, UNC, UConn, and MSU always snagging these players away.
But, there is plenty of talent...sometimes hidden gems (see D Wade).

Illinois is a top 15 job nationally.
Mississippi State is a better job than South Carolina, stricly because they don't have to compete as much with the ACC schools for local talent. Mississippi kids have a bit of loyalty.
South Carolina could be OK with a coach like Marshall.
Nebraska needs to invest money in their program and hire a great coach. Not sure they will do it.
Tulsa is definitely last on this list. They are a great job for a coach on the way up.

Frank Martin turned down Miami last year, which is where he is from. I also think he could be a player for the Illinois job, if he is interested. He has a significantly better job at K-State right now than South Carolina. Don't see this happening.

I've heard Dana Altman's name being thrown around for the Nebraska job.

One if these teams is still playing in a tourney that MSU didnt get into. Are you really comparing Ill to Wisky?

Illinois should be a great job a for a recruiter who has contacts in Chicago

Historically, Wisconsin can't hold a candle to Illinois. With the exception of recent records, Illinois is above Wisconsin in every measurable stat, most important of which is budget and recruiting territory.
Wisconsin has a great coach right now that wins despite his lack of talent, not because of it. Illinois is a top 15 job nationally.

Bull.
Tulsa is a great springboard to a sweet job. Nebraska is a dead end in the wilderness. Which is why Tulsa is only behind Illinois and State...once you land at South Carolina and Nebraska...you've been passed over - your career is on the downhill.

You do realize that Tulsa's coach, Doug Wojcik, was just fired, right?
