A great spinoff question would be --

Where would the 2011 LSU team be ranked, all-time, had they finished that year 14-0 and National Champions???

With 2 wins over Bama
Wins over the Pac-12 and Rose Bowl winning Oregon Ducks
And a win over Big East and Orange Bowl winning West Virginia

Plus the rest of the top 10 teams they beat that year.

Would you have them in your top 5?

They'd have a top 5 resume, but I can't honestly say a team with Jarrett Lee/Jordan Jefferson at QB would be one of the 3-5 best teams ever.

Alabama needed a blocked FG to beat 7-6 Lane Kiffin.

And FSU needed a missed FG to beat 6-6 Clemson in '99.

As has been reiterated, '95 Nebraska didn't screw around with anyone.

2011 wasn't because they have a 1 in the L column which 2009 obviously didn't have, they also played a weaker SOS than the 09 team.

Best record doesn't always equal best team. Example: 2007 Hawaii and 2009 Cincinnati were both undefeated and went to the Sugar Bowl. Both teams got slaughtered.

2009 Alabama let bad teams hang way too close and never faced a team as good as 2011 LSU.

If LSU won that game, they'd certainly be in the discussion along with the 2009 Alabama team. The 2011 Tigers played the 8th strongest SOS in America and procured a 24 pt MOV, 24.27 SRS. That offense averaged 5.7 yards per play, defense held opponents to only 90 rushing yards per game. They defeated 8(at the time) ranked teams that year by an average MOV of 22 pts. WOW.

Bad teams? The 09 Tide played 10 opponents that finished +.500 and defeated them all, they played the defending champion, undefeated, Tebow-led Gators and annihilated them in the SEC title game. All that matters is that you win and DON'T LOSE, which is the basic premise of college football. As has been iterated, the 09 Tide finished undefeated against the nation's toughest schedule and defeated opponents by a 21 pt average. Therefore, they amounted to the best team that year, that decade, and since 1990.

Auburn and Tennessee were bad teams in 2009.

Both finished over .500 and attended bowls, define bad.

Tennessee was 7-6 (4-4)
Auburn was 8-5 (3-5)

5 losses or more generally qualifies as a bad team to me, with a few exceptions. 2016 Auburn was not a bad team. Those two teams were not good though.

1995 Nebraska played 4 top 10 teams and beat them by an average of 31 points per game. Just about every one of their games was over by halftime. Their dominance has not been matched, and I'm not sure if it ever will be. There was such a wide gap between them and the rest of college football.

And only beat our 4 loss team by 7 (remember, Mike Dubose beat us twice that year).

Easier to achieve such a gap when you play only 6 +.500 teams out of 12, 09 Bama played 10 out of 14 and still achieved 21 pt MOV. That's incredible.

1995 Nebraska never trailed after halftime in any game, and only trailed in the second quarter twice all season.

I'm glad to see someone else have 2012 Alabama as Saban's best team. The defense was still dominant and their offense was so much better than 2011.

We were actually beating them 10-6 at the start of the second quarter and one of the broadcasters said, "Nebraska better not get too far behind."

I still can't believe Colorado has a claim to the 1990 national championship. What a joke.

It's before 1990, but the only team worse than them to win the AP title I can think of is the 1984 BYU team.

As a Bama fan, no they weren't.

I doubt that the 2009 UA team would even beat the 2016 UA team.

I'd take our 96 team out of the top 5 and replace them with our 08 team because the defense was better.

Our SOS was #4 per BCS metrics.
We were top 5 in both scoring defense and offense.
We beat 3 teams by double digits on neutral fields who finished in the top 10.

Losing by 1 point to an eventual top 15 team (who also beat #7 48-34 in the Cotton Bowl) shouldn't keep us out of the top 5.
