Actually, Cal still had above average range when he moved. He got moved to 3rd as a power play by Davey Johnson to show the team who is boss.
Cal's range was sorely underrated because of his outstanding positioning. He got to tons of balls despite being slow. Jeter's sort of the opposite. He's got quick instincts, but terrible positioning. Mainly because he's so slow to his left he cheats so far to second base. Which he covers with his great arm.
