Since this is the time(playoffs) where we build a QB's narrative and whether or not he is GOAT-Status.

I decided to look at one of the other QB's mentioned when talking about the top 5 all time:
Unitas.

Did he ever get grief because he didn't "really" win a superbowl? He was pulled midway through SBV due to an injury after an Int (already lost a fumble) and the Colts were down 13-6 at the time.

I'm not saying this shouldn't make him top 5, he was a part of the 2 of the most influential games of the modern era (58 Championship and SB3 1-1 in those games and another NFL Championship), and his late career numbers are pretty amazing too. I'm just wondering if he ever experienced the same level of criticisms that current generation QB's do?.

This is like saying Otto Graham should be knocked because he never won a Super Bowl.

I was just wondering if he got grief. Although I'm sure first take would say that about Otto Graham.

He won 3 NFL titles and then went to two Super Bowls (Colts won one)

He went to 2 SBs, but he didn't play in the win. He was hurt much of the season that year. He was a great QB. hard to compare him to today's better Qbs, given how different the game is now. I really don't consider anyone having given him grief over the SB issue.

Unitas turned 30 in 1963. The Super Bowl didn't being until 1966. The fact Unitas played in two Super Bowls is pretty amazing, honestly.

That's like saying Tom Brady should get grief because he "only" won three.

Johnny did not get grief about the SB because of his age. In his prime (before the SB) he was famous for come from behind wins in the final minutes.

A lot of people criticized him for not retiring earlier since he had lost all mobility. He was one on those athletes who didn't want to leave the stage. He was an intensely competitive individual.

Joe Namath also hung around a couple of years too long.

He threw a 75 yard TD pass in SuperBowl V, the one the Colts won.

He played late in the loss to the Jets in SB III. He was hurt and Earl Morrall started for him. Unitas led the Colts to their only score of the game I'm pretty sure.

Weird timing and symmetry. Morrall started SB3, stunk, and Unitas got what was pretty much a garbage TD. In SB5, Unitas started, was injured, Morrall came in, and they won.

In SB5, Unitas' was 3 for 9 with 2 INTs, and that one long touchdown to Mackey may have been illegal. The pass was deflected but they determined that Dallas deflected the ball. If the Colts player touched it first, it was not a legal catch.

And again at the time the "Super Bowl" was very new and NFL Championships were considered to be on par with what the Super Bowl is today, as it was perceived to be the better league. Johnny won multiple NFL Championships and 3 MVPs before the first Super Bowl was ever played. His legacy was already firmly cemented.
