QBs of today vs years past

I heard Jim Kelly of the buffalo bills in the early 90's say that the QB's of today only have to run the offense. He said that QBs in his generation and those before him had to call plays themselves and be strategic when calling passing/running plays. If true, imagine if Peyton manning calling his own plays

a lot of the elite QB's in the NFL have the authority to change plays that are called and are also given multiple plays to choose from depending on what they see on the field. Kelly is wrong. Scouting/film study is more complicated than it's ever been

I took it that Kelly meant that he and other qbs called the whole game.. They didn't have the radio in the helmets
