UNC is barely in the top 10 of their own conference during the playoff era, and that’s with them being in the weakest ACC division, when they had divisions.
Texas was totally irrelevant the 10 years prior to joining the SEC. In fact they were a joke aside from 05-10 in the Big12 era.
Then they got new leadership that saw the potential and went all in. I’m not saying UNC is a sleeping giant but you’re naive if you think they can’t be a legit SEC program with the proper leadership.
North Carolina is a huge state and a vast majority of the people there are Tarheel supporters much like Texas with the Longhorns. Internal buy in plus SEC checks can put them right in the mix.
People assume teams have to be a top 5 CFP contender to be considered for SEC expansion. That’s simply not true.

What's funny is that everyone here knows UNC brings subpar value to the SEC in football, yet everyone views it as a way of spreading the conference footprint. Everyone is worried about money too when money is the least of the SEC's concerns.
This is exactly what the Pac-10 leadership thought when it had the opportunity to raid the Big 12 and take six schools of its choosing. Shortsighted thinking destroyed that conference.
Whether we like it or not, if the SEC sits on its hands and lets the B1G take the best ACC schools (and probably Notre Dame at some point), then the SEC has needlessly put itself at a long-term financial disadvantage. And it would have less leverage for issues like number of playoff bids. Then how long is it before some of those top SEC schools start thinking about greener pastures with fatter paychecks in the B1G? We all know Texas will get in that line, but others would too, eventually.
It’s one final round of expand or die. Because after the ACC gets raided, there is nothing left to gut.

Just can't see the SEC adding Clemson. They add nothing. Not even sure Florida State adds anything either. I'd much rather have North Carolina and one of the Virginia schools.

UNC and UVA makes sense for the SEC. It solidifies the last two major Southern states. I don't know how much money they add for TV, but they are big states. I think the tv partners would pay enough to keep the per team payouts the same.
The big ten would be locked out of the South in a way and that would be big for the SEC. But the only team out there that really matters is Notre Dame.

clemson provides big match up potential. i do agree UNC is number 1. I think clemson then florida state are 2 & 3 interchangable.
Number 4 would prolly be UVA. shite program but its a great school that has good other sports and its the flagship of the state.
i dont want any expansion but if we do, I would like UNC, Clemson, FSU and possible Va tech.
or if just taking 2, i think UNC, Clemson would be the two just because of the value they bring.

I don't want any expansion either and I want VT for selfish reasons my aunt and uncle live in Blacksburg within walking distance of the stadium.

First thing I always do in CFB 26, put it all back the way it was. This will never end. And it will continue to make less and less sense.

The sec and big ten will likely split up the carolina and virginia schools and end up sharing that region. Also the big ten will probably eventually get into Florida with either fsu or miami.

This was a more valid argument back in the 2010-2012 round of expansion, when new tv markets directly translated for more revenue for the conference. That's how we ended up with Rutgers in the B1G, and to a lesser extent, Missouri in the SEC and Maryland in the B1G.
New markets still matter, but not as much as they did a dozen years ago. It's now about big brands that create compelling match-ups. That's what the broadcasters will pay to air - especially in an age of digital media where cable tv markets really don't matter as much. Clemson and Florida State are both strong candidates because of the great SEC match-ups they offer.

UVA is the perfect fit for the SEC if you want Vandy's fanbase and A&M's trophy case. And they're so woke they make Austin blush. VT is culturally the SEC with a large passionate fanbase that lives and breathes football. VT is the top football program in the state of Virginia and DC with by far the most fans. No one in DC or Virginia gives a shite about UVA, not even they're own students and alums. Meanwhile VT has 10,000 more students and they're alumni are down to earth, wealthier and more successful than UVA. VT is the best public STEM school on the east coast. But UVA has a top transgender studies program so they got that going for them!
lol. You sure sound unbiased

Can someone explain to me the recycled use of expand the market?
ESPN owns the tv rights to the SEC.
I have never had an issue watching an SEC game when I lived in VA or NC.
What am I missing or are people just acting like the tv rights are similar to Jefferson pilot days?
