quote:

The first round is loaded with talented players at both quarterback and edge rusher. But while the quarterbacking group has a lot of players who have already shown it on the football field, the edge class includes a lot of athletes who’ve yet to put it all together.

quote:

1. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS – QB TREVOR LAWRENCE, CLEMSON

It’s going to take 15 straight losses, but the Jaguars are only a few months away from a possible decade of prosperity. Lost in the whole “how many No. 1 picks at quarterback actually won a Super Bowl with the team that drafted them” conversation is the fact that consistently losing hurts. Even if the Jaguars never win a Super Bowl with Lawrence, they’ll still win more games than they did before he arrived.

quote:

2. NEW YORK JETS – QB ZACH WILSON, BYU

No need to overthink this. Sure, Sam Darnold could turn things around next season after an injury-plagued Year 3 that’s seen him earn a 52.7 passing grade so far. But why take that chance when you have to immediately pay him if he does? Wilson is uber-talented, and he has tape that’s littered with special throws.

quote:

3. CINCINNATI BENGALS – OT PENEI SEWELL, OREGON

They might as well hand in the card now. The Bengals already had fans in the stands openly opining for Sewell with their signage on Monday night. He’s the best offensive tackle prospect we’ve scouted in our seven years of doing this — and he won’t even turn 21 until next fall.

quote:

4. CAROLINA PANTHERS – QB JUSTIN FIELDS, OHIO STATE

Fields doesn’t fall too far, as Carolina has now fully hit reset after firing general manager Marty Hurney. The Panthers simply have to set their sights higher than Teddy Bridgewater and his 66.8 passing grade this season. They have too much talent offensively to be a below-average scoring offense.

quote:

5. ATLANTA FALCONS – EDGE KWITY PAYE, MICHIGAN

In an edge class loaded with physical freaks, Paye sits atop the bunch. He also saw his pass-rushing production take a massive step forward this season. After 37 pressures in all of 2019, Paye notched 22 in only four games before a groin injury this season.

rest of the list

6. Miami Dolphins (from Houston Texans) – WR Ja’Marr Chase, LSU

Now that would be funny for the rant at least. Miami really needs WRs though, would be a great pick.

quote:

12. San Francisco 49ers – QB Mac Jones, Alabama

Too high IMO, dont think this happens

quote:

15. New England Patriots – WR DeVonta Smith, Alabama

They need a QB

quote:

28. Pittsburgh Steelers – QB Kyle Trask, Florida

Probably swap Trask and Mac draft spots

quote:

31. Green Bay Packers – WR Kadarius Toney, Florida

Would tear it up

Seems a little too high on some of the QBs and too low on the elite skill guys

quote:

15. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS – WR DEVONTA SMITH, ALABAMA Smith falls all the way to 15 not because of talent, but because yet another deep receiver class will likely cause teams to pass early in the draft, knowing they can get one on the wrap. However, with how big of a need it is for New England, they don’t have that luxury. Smith currently owns a 94.3 receiving grade, so he could very well break the PFF College single-season record for receiving grade by a wide receiver.

I’ll gladly take this tho

Him and Adams would be fun to watch. Plus upgrade the WR alongside MVS and Lazard.

Sure, but in this mock there was already 5 QBs taken before their pick

Picking a QB for the sake of picking a QB is how you end up with awful QBs.

The QB problem is much easier to solve if you can fix the weapons issue first

I don't see Kyle Pitts falling all the way to 18.

Trask ending up in Pittsburgh would be the best spot for him. Either the Steelers or the Saints.

I wouldn't. That's far too high for him. His arm strength is average at best. The other QBs are far more talented, IMHO.

Seems like a reach. Mac Jones does too.

Is it? He had 6 or 7 deep ball shots that were right on target against Bama.

I don't think arm strength is really an issue for him, its more that his mechanics aren't always perfect, which messes up some of his throws.

Even though he opted out this year, he still has the second-most deep receptions since the start of 2019.

Damn Chase, you a bad man.

26. Jets Jayson Owen Edge Penn State

This is a bit of a reach

As it stands now the other DE graduating from Penn State ( Shaka Toney ) is a more finished product.

Both may end a Jason Kearse tweener types on Sundays neither worth a first round risk

That’s a pretty incredible stat.

He should’ve been a Heisman finalist.

Any 1st Rd WR for Texans would start immediately and shows the ineptitude of GM BoB.

Yep. I’d be fine with doubling down in the second with a guard.
