I watched that game.

He tied the record against the Cubs, in a game that ended in a tie because of darkness.

It was before my time but my dad and uncles always love to talk about it. Do You think his MLB hit record will ever be beaten? I remember some thinking Jeter might break it but he ended up 500+ short.

Not a chance, Ichiro was the only outside shot and he lost however many years in NPL

Players don't see the same pitcher enough times, too much specialization and playing the numbers for teams. In addition to the career longevity, luck, and skill regression

I hope you're right. I love to watch the Pursuit of Records but I want this one to last forever. Pete has a bad reputation but he always gave his all.

The biggest injustice in professional sports is Pete Rose not being in the HOF

“Pete Rose is a disgrace to the game. Anyway, tonight’s game between the Reds and Cardinals is brought to you by FanDuel, official sportsbook of Major League Baseball.”

Agree.

He would be in as a player. What he did as a manager shouldn't count.

Would be awkward if he got busted in 1992 instead of 1989.

Yes, that was a quote from the football board. Sorry to all for the confusion.

as much cheating has gone on with steroids and other things such as the Astros. Yet this man can’t be forgiven. It’s a shame

I saw it live as well.

I think technically they had to revise later when one of Ty Cobbs hits was found to have been counted twice. But yes, an unbeatable record

I had never heard this story. So technically, he broke the record in Chicago?

Was watching from my couch after getting home from high school football practice. I am a huge Reds and Pete Rose fan. I cried.

Meh. Kinda funny how MLB just erased all of Rose’s accomplishments

I think it's possible but unlikely. Unlike Cy Young's wins and some other records the conditions and strategy of the game haven't changed much regarding getting a hit. Players still get 162 games, 700 plate appearances, 3 strikes, etc and are looking to smack a ball. All it takes is talent, health and longevity.

As someone mentioned earlier, Ichiro could have made a solid run at it had he started in MLB instead of Japan. He had 4367 professional hits and while Japanese competition wasn't on par with US, they played fewer games so his hit totals would have been similar. There's an argument he is the "hit king" albeit with an asterisk.

At some point in the infinite future another will come along.
