again, not a lot of others have done the same. He left a life of complete comfort and stability.....I don't see how you can argue that a lot of people have left a life like that to do dirt in the middle east.

Most walk away from more than money and stability--a family and many walk away from their kids as well.

I bet if there was a way to look up the demographics, most people enlisted before having a family. The ones that don't, usually do it for financial stability. There is always that one person that's a true patriot that makes the sacrifice for the sole benefit of serving their country but they are very few and far between. PT was the best example for all of us because we were well aware of what he was giving up. You can also throw his family in there along with the lifestyle and monetary blessings that most of us would never give up voluntarily.

Its pointless to argue....if Tillman had played for LSU and then the Saints this thread would go 500 pages.

Oh and about Darren Woodson....hes actually not even in my top 2 safeties at ASU. Mitchell "Fright Night" Freedman is #1 and Nathan Laduke is #2.

I liked him in the NFL more than college.

ETA: Probably because he played safety in the NFL so he hit way harder!

I know this was earlier in the thread, but I want to comment on this.

Because playing football and joining the military doesn't come close to equating Presidency.

He was popular in the Arizona fan base, if he hadn't died the majority of the country, even sports fans, wouldn't know who he is.. just like when he played football.

I understand that the odds would have been against him to become president, but a successful life in politics is not far fetched at all. You said it yourself, he was very popular in the Arizona fan base. If he had run for Senator in the state of Arizona with his popularity, he very well could have won. After serving in the Senate for a while, it would have also been possible for him to become a presidential candidate. Is John McCain not a Senator from Arizona?

Please. They were tying to strengthen the myth that you have bought into.

He wanted to kill the enemy, and he died. He also happened to be good at football. That's it. He is no more worthy of hero status as any of the other young men who have died for our freedom. Enough already.

Come on now, lets be honest here. How many people do you know would of turned down millions of dollars to go fight in a war. Oh lets not forget they played a sport that they loved which they only have to play half a year and then can chill and spend their millions during the offseason. That's why Pat Tillman's story is a big deal.

I just read this entire thread.

Can you show me where multiple "people" as you say said bad things about him???

Who said they don't like Pat Tillman???

Just because others think he is no more of a hero than any other soldier who died for his country, doesn't mean that person doesn't like him, nor does it mean that person said anything bad about him.

it is sad that in times past (wwI, wwII) movie stars, baseball players, and other famous people would support their country when needed and now these same people speak negatively about their country. Pat Tillman was a rare exception. while countless others have given their lives (and none of them are any more or less important than Tillman) it cannot be denied that Tillman did something exceptional by giving up a multi-million dollar career to serve his country.

for those who may not know they dedicated the new bridge over the hoover dam in memory of Tillman. just thought i would throw that out there.

Pat Tillman probably would have never run for political office. While he did want to make a difference, I don't think he would've wanted to be in the spotlight that much. What he did was heroic, along with his brother Kevin, but I also don't think he should be honored anymore than other soldiers that have died in combat. His family feels the same way, that is part of why they had such a big problem with the way the media/politicians blew the whole thing up into front page news. His mom wrote a book to make her feelings known (you should all check it out), but continues to refuse to go on Oprah b/c she doesnt think Pat would've wanted that kind of attention.

I don't think anyone is being disrespectful. It's a terrible thing when any of our young men die.
