Howie Kendrick would be interesting as a lower cost FA who could DH or play LF in Minute Maid. Could platoon with Kyle Tucker once he comes up and basically be another Marwin at that point.

No way I trust Kendrick him being 34 and while he had a good season this year I wouldn't want him as anything but a pinch hitter

Brantley or CarGo would be really high risk/high reward adds. Both will likely be 1 or 2 year deals for a little more money than someone like Kendrick. But if they stay healthy (and DHing them would help with that) then it could be a great addition

CarGo will be interesting how he basically fell off in Coors... Brantley I think he ends up in Seattle as they need OF help

And I'm not totally ruling out that type of hitter. Like you say, those guys would provide more offensively than Beltran. If you're surrounding them with guys that get on base a lot, you can tolerate 1 guy with a low average and lots of Ks if he's knocking several 2 and 3 run homers.

But there was a clear devaluation of that type of hitter from 2016 to 2017 and it lead to great success. I'm just not sure if they'll go right back and spend that type of money on a hitter like that.

As you said, the market for hitters sucks this year. We need a DH but I don't think we're breaking the bank to do it. One name that sort of triggered my interest as a fit was Melky Cabrera. He kind of fits the mold of our lineup. Decent average, doubles power with mid teens homers, doesn't strike out a ton, won't be too expensive or long term. I think he could essentially replicate Beltran's numbers.

I brought up Brantley because he is the high average type we seem to be shifting towards. He batted .299 for Cleveland this year.

He just came off a 3 year 42 million deal, he will be looking for more than the Astros may want to spend (assuming 1-3 million a year)

All of my offensive suggestions right now would end up with a 7 man pen instead of the 8 that we will likely go with.

C: McCann/Backup/Gattis
IF: Yuli/Altuve/Correa/Bregman/Moran
OF: Springer/Reddick/Jake/Fisher
ÚTIL: Marwin

Fisher or Moran would be the odd man out depending on where Marwin is playing most of the time.

Those are all meh options when we already have lots of position players who can fill out a lineup. Spend money on the pen 1st.

I may be underestimating his market. I just looked up his stats and he had a better year than I thought and is a couple years younger than I remembered too. I was thinking he was 35 or so.

Honestly I think the most likely scenario is what Dhav mentioned on the last page. Gattis back to full time DH and we go with a more defensive oriented back up catcher. Gattis is too good a hitter to be limited to a back up role. That upgrades DH on the cheap and gives us a potential defensive option at catcher that we didn't have between Brevan McGattis.

If Gattis can hit 30 bombs like in 2016 that’s a hell of an upgrade from Beltran DHing as often as he did this year

Yep. 27 and 32 home runs in his seasons as the DH. Knocked back to 12 in his backup catcher role (although he did set a career high in doubles). Putting him back at DH makes the most sense from a financial stand point and he's likely as good or better than anyone on the free market when you consider the whole package of offensive and financial value.

Bring in LuCroy

Catching free agents are weak, Avila and Montero are the best of the bunch

I agree with the recent post about sliding Gattis back into the primary DH role, replace him with a good defensive catcher, and then focus on the bullpen.

Also, it’s going to be awesome to see Whitley join this rotation sometime in June next year.

This needs to happen and he needs to be glued to Justin Verlander, learning as much as he can from him.

Very unlikely. We have good SP depth and he’s still young and developing, but it’s not out of the question if he keeps dominating

I think we also need to be prepared for some regression from Marwin. He's a solid player, but his batted ball profile and BABIP say he is going to take a step back, which is fine. I do think Moran can contribute next year, he looked really comfortable before getting hurt. Marwin is also a FA after next year I believe

I think Whitley is a reliever on the postseason roster next year

There's probably a lot of regression to be found from our hitters. Reddick's .314 average was 34 points higher than his previous career high, largely boosted by his uncharacteristic success against lefties.

Marwin tailed off on the power in the 2nd half. 16 HR to 7 but he did still hit .300. His success was driven by being more selective at the plate. He laid off those breaking pitches low and inside which boosted his walks and had him swinging at more hittable pitches. BAbip is mostly luck so if he was lucky this year, he may be more unlucky next year. But if he can maintain that selectivity, he may not have to regress to the pre-2017 Marwin.
