Just looked it up, Niedermayer is the captain, with the alternate captains being Iginla, Pronger (a little surprising, since he's not even a captain for the Flyers, and is only an "A" for half of their games), and Crosby ( ).

Gretzky must have mixed emotions about this thing. Wasnt he GM when they were knocked out early in Turin?

You really don't like him huh?

Any specific reason why? I mean, I have a reason because he plays for the Penguins. Is that yours too?

I didnt think they changed rules for anything, including rink size.

If they changed the rink size to NHL standards it will be slower. I was saying they had to widen and make the rink longer. I know the trapezoid isnt there either, so goalies will roam more. I wonder what NHL officials will be used, they generally call it very tight, but all Olympic games are called that way generally.

That is what I have been saying. If the NHL rink was used the game would be slower. The NHL Rink to put into historical terms NHL terms.

Old Boston Garden had smaller rink=NHL
NHL Regulation Rink=Olympic rink

how so? id expect a faster paced game with a smaller rink. With a bigger rink there is more room for just playing a slower possession style and not have the action forced on you.

Thats why i think using an NHL size rink these games will be great, id expect faster paced game and more hitting

A standard NHL rink is 200 feet long and 85 feet wide, with goal lines 11 feet from the end boards.

International ice is 210 feet long and 98 feet wide. Goal lines are 13 feet from the end boards.

With a smaller rink you cant get any skating room. That is why teams like the Oilers and Cannucks of the 80's-90's loved 4 on 4 they had skaters and room. Bigger size more room to skate.

And for my old Boston Garden Comparison, the Bruins rink was smaller than regualtion NHL rinks but was grandfathered in.

Faster pace and more hitting, but less "skill" and general offense.

I think it has a chance to really take off this year as far as popularity. This is the first time it's been in HD on such a wide scale and of all the sports, hockey benefits the most from HD. There's always at least one surprise team; I think it's a safe bet that Canada, Russia, or Sweden won't medal. I expect Canada to find it's way into the gold medal game; they've got the most talent and home ice. I'd love to see a Russia/Canada final, but I just have a feeling it won't happen. The U.S. has no chance if Miller can't get it together. If he plays like he did earlier this season, they definitely can make some noise, but it's an uphill battle.

Well, Miller played well tonight against the Sharks so maybe that'll get him out of the slump. I really think Finland is going to do some damage; I don't think Sweden has the goaltending to go all the way. Slovakia and the Czech Republic are worth keeping an eye on for bronze contention. It should be fun to watch.

Steve Mason (in a basically season-long slump) played well against the Sharks (what's been up with them, lately?) the other day, and proceeded to let up 4 the next game, so...

Partially (I actually hate the Penguins more because of him, than I hate him because of the Penguins, but there are a few other reasons I can't stand the Pens). Mainly, I just hate how he's a crybaby douche.

I wonder how much Mario paid Bettman to rig the lottery for Crosby?

I mean Pittsburgh was leaving, the people didnt care, and Mario was going bankrupt.

That was the draft right after the lockout, so everybody was in the lottery, and the entire draft was picked by ping pong balls. I believe it was basically something like the teams that sucked the year before the lockout had 3, the middle of the pack teams had 2, and the best had 1. I remember we were still around at #7, and I was pumped at the chance to get Crosby, when we ended up with the 6th. Now, I hate him.

But, you're right. Even with 3 ping pong balls, very bad odds to get the #1 pick, but it was the Pens. Just one of the reasons I hate them.
