Alou probably doesn’t catch the ball anyway.

Alou admits he wouldn’t have caught it

That was said by Alou years later for purposes of mitigating his antics that really started the whole emotional backlash by the crowd. I've watched that replay 100 times, he was gonna catch that.

They never had a 5-0 lead. They were down 3 in the second and tied it up and then went up 5-3 in the 4th.

Well, I misread (didn't pay enough attention to) the box score. But, larger point stands. No one play or one pitch decides the outcome of a series. They had the lead in Game 7 and couldn't close out.

As a cub fan, Alou and Gonzalez are 100% more to blame. Hartman is a scape goat because the team acted like pussies

There were dozens of fans around him doing the same damn thing, and what most people would have done. He just happened to be the one nearest the ball.

The reaction from the player is what really caused the backlash

Yeah, there was the one dude trying to catch it, and when Bartman caught it and everybody started acting like flipping idiots, he goes to pinting out and cussing Bartman. I wanted to punch that dude in the face.

I also put some of the blame on Dusty Baker. I mound visit would not have been a bad idea considering what was happening.
