They cut back the irrigation well over half to only water fairways only. Something like 1300 to 550 either squire yardage or sprinkler heads. Don't remember.

I haven't heard anything like that. And I bet I would've heard it since we have a lot grass breeding going on at MSU.
Breeding takes awhile from when you think you have a good grass to being commercially used. And then still takes awhile.
Champion and the ultradwarfs came out in like 1996 and some people are still resistant to change. But they will be the southern standard for putting greens for a long time to come IMO.
Zoysia could make a move into the southern market. Much better shade tolerance but still can't get it like an ultradwarf. A very heat tolerant bentgrass will need to come along for courses to consider going with bent again.
Bent is even tough to manage in summers up north. Really tough in the south. Cool season grasses are a lot more fragile.

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping you would see that
And you're pretty much dead on, I hear lots more TifEagle and Miniverde talk these days instead of Champions...interesting to hear that you still believe it is the best option....
No problem. Obviously you can tell I enjoy discussing it.

When there are only three main competitors, it comes down to marketing and reputation. Champion seems to have market for elite courses. I'm sure they are working any problems with their grasses. They're very proud of Champion.

The sprinklers were moved to the middle of the fairway only, instead of near the old rough areas.
They are using 1/4th of the water they used prior to the **upgrade**.

why do so many of you not like the new course? ... seems crenshaw and co explained why they changed it ... it's the original set up and just another way for golf to be played ...

I'd like a traditional U.S. Open layout with tall rough and skinny landing strips.
This will be cool to see though, this year.

I prefer fully manicured landing strips myself, but to each his own I guess

That's a pretty big deal actually. Lotta places give courses water use restrictions. I think every state will eventually have some sort of restriction.
We are starting some drought research this summer.

Are they allowed to ground clubs in the new waste areas?
Posted on 6/11/14 at 12:27 pm to BRgetthenet
I think you all will like this layout. I do agree they took shortcuts and an easy way out because of the women right after but all of the burned spots you see is scalped and primo'd fairway making balls funnel into sandy areas. It will be a fun tourney watching most guys hitting irons off every tee.

if officially marked a waste area, then yes
Posted on 6/11/14 at 12:29 pm to Croacka
Yes they are waste areas not bunkers.

Bubba mentioned the 617 yd par 5 and going off the tee with a 3 iron.

Like I said, it'll be cool this year. But next year I want the tall rough back.

I like 'em trimmed low.

I hot stinger 4 iron on that hard pan and it shot like a canon. I hit it 250 but it went into a waste area.

Anybody wanna make some ban bets?

you will get drunk and get banned before any bets can be made!

That was when we lost to Georgia. If you didn't get banned after that game, you aren't really an LSU fan imo.

what bets did you have in mind?
