yeah, tho merion was just 2 years ago ... unless you're talking about the early 60s/70s ... when they played it at pinehurst the first time, all the players were excited there wasn't any rough around the greens, or at least not right next to the greens ... it was typically long, and there was plenty of rough, but the lack of rough right around those domed greens really appealed to the pros, iirc ... john daly didn't seem to appreciate it as i remember he needed several shots to keep the ball on the green on one hole, but everyone else was excited about it ... before that, every course was long, narrow, and void of much imagination, other than when it was at pebble, and that's due to the course rather than the set up ...

That sucks. I was hoping the greens would stay ridiculous. A dude I know at the practice round today said the greens are unbelievably slick.

They just gotta keep them alive for this week and next week for the Womens Open. They are tearing them up and putting down 'Champion' bermuda after that.

they gotta watch em ... it gets too dry on a course designed to play fast, you can have some greens that just will not work ...

The USGA wants the greens to be play the same from the first practice rounds earlier this morning to a Monday playoff next week if necessary.

Whether they will be able to achieve that will be up to Mother Nature.

I played #2 several times back in the early 90's and there was a lot of the sand and native plants around the course then, but not enough to really impact the game as punitively as the greens.

I watched the Golf Channel last night and they showed the transformation of the course back to as it was designed to play, or at least back to the 40's. Wow! I wish it had looked like that when I played there. Win or lose, the players getting to play on this course are getting something to experience that is truly special.

Cheers to Coore and Crenshaw for doing this.

Met Crenshaw at a charity event, but not Coore. Ben was affable so maybe Coore is the Yin to his Yang?

The course doesn't look that impressive in HD.

He's the same weirdo who went in and tossed shitty waste 'native' areas all over Pinehurst and called it a redo.

I wanna get in the course redo biz if all it takes is tossing out some waste area around spots that were tough to manage.

Quick question.

I've never been to a golf tourney before but will be there Sunday. I know at the Masters you can't take any photography stuff (including cell phones) in the gates, is that true for all major tournaments?

Obviously I'd like to take a ton of pics for the memories, so it'll be kind of a bummer to not be able to have my phone. For those that are familiar, are there places to take some pictures before you actually "go in" (for lack of a better phrase I guess)?

Any other tips for a first timer? I'm going with 3 buddies. I just assumed we'd follow the leaders I guess. Is that the best way compared to just sitting at a hole?

Just don't snap pics by the ropes. You'll be fine.

And yeah, you'll end up walking around and seeing different holes. You're gonna have a blast.

So you're saying we can take phones in?

I'm not positive about the US Open, but I think Augusta is the only place they are totally prohibited during the tournament.

First stop of the day would be the beverage/food counter! Next I would watch a few groups tee off on the 1st tee, then go backward starting at #18. It gives you a chance to see everyone on the course.
