Ducked is too strong a word. He did intentially ask the UFC for three different fighters as options, none named Weidman (or GSP, Bones, Vitor).
Weidman had 9 fights on his résumé and Silva may not have thought he was a worthy opponent (boy, was he wrong).
Better competition? Pre 2006 maybe, after I don't know about that.

There is some truth there. It was a no win situation until people started noticing how good Weidman is. Silva takes a fight he knows is a terrible matchup style wise against the #2 MW in the UFC but because people don't know him very well he doesn't get much credit for a win and gets destroyed for a loss.
That did change in the past few weeks though as people realized Weidman is no joke. I think it is a very respectable loss for Silva because he took on a guy he was at a distinct disadvantage against style wise.

BTW, the Frye - Coleman fight was in '96.
It was the night GnP was born. Frye was the crowd favorite and Coleman the decorated wrestler. Coleman took him down very early in the first and administered one of the worst GnP's I've ever seen, mainly because the rounds were 15 minutes back then and Coleman maintained top control for almost the entire round pounding Frye's face into a bloody meatloaf.

I have been watching MMA and buying UFC PPVs for a very long time though. I've bought UFC, Pride, Strikeforce, and BoDog events and been to bars to watch most of those I didn't buy over the years. First UFC PPV I watched was Don Fry vs Mark Coleman back in 1995 or so when it was still "human cock-fighting".
Well, you should have put down the beers when the fights were on and actually watched. Your comments have been pretty ignorant thus far. If you can not give Anderson Silva credit for what he has accomplished up to last night you are no better than the fan who started watching MMA last night for the first time.

Or maybe you give him too much credit and think he is the GOAT because you haven't been watching long enough to have proper perspective. That seems pretty commmon with people who have mostly just watched the UFC over the past 7-8 years though.

BTW, here is the Frye-Coleman fight. Found it on a ranking of top 30 oldschool MMA fights.
Coleman took him down seconds into the fight, had him bloodied up within a minute and spent 11 total minutes pounding away with top control. It is a good watch if you have never seen it and want to see the birth of GnP.

During the early days of the UFC, the line between being a complete no-name and a world champion was pretty thin. UFC 10 pitted reigning champion Don Frye against a fresh flock of new faces. The Predator was confident he would retain dominance over the UFC and didnt put much effort into training. Thats a bad way to approach things when one of the men in the tournament is a wrestler whos substantially more powerful and accomplished than you are. Frye would soon know what it felt like to be Amaury Bitetti.
Coleman was pretty down on his luck before the UFC came into his life, and during his fight with Frye he released that newfound energy all over Fryes skull. Using Fryes face and body as a drawing board, Coleman invented ground-and-pound in this fight and subsequently revolutionized the game. Frye had the heart of a champion and pressed on no matter what, even throwing up a submission at one point. Colemans brutality proved too much, however, and the fight was finally stopped at the eleven-minute mark. This war skyrocketed the popularity of both men to unprecedented heights in the budding MMA scene.

Im not going to get in a pissing match with you of who is a bigger MMA fan but Ive been watching since UFC 1, so now its not the opinion of someone who has watched the UFC over the past 7-8 years.
When Anderson Silva came into the UFC he didn't just win his fights, he tore through his competition. 8 straight finishes before getting Thales Leites who didn't want to fight him. He was on a completely different level than everyone else, ala what we are seeing with JBJ right now.

Looked to me that silva was fighting care free because he was tired of being champ. Especially after what he said in the interview, i think he was ready to lose... STILL THE GOAT of UFC. dud was always my favorite.

If you have seen the AS documentary "Like Water" you can almost get that vibe even back then, that he just hasn't been 100% into it. The film documents from his fight against Maia up to the first Chael fight. Watching it I just got the vibe that he was just going through the motions.

Really seems like an excuse.
Personally I do not think it matters if Silva was more motivated than he has ever been in his entire life. Weidman is the superrior fighter and wins.

Nah never saw it but will definitely check it out! He said he was tired, and I'm sure a 7 year run as champ will take it out of you. Dont know if this reign as champion will ever be topped..

Tiger n Miami, if anderson silva doesn't play around in the fight he wins hands down.

I don't think it will. It was a different level of competition when Anderson started his MW reign.

I won't even argue with you. Just know you are wrong and need help in your MMA analysis.

I've watched MMA regularly since around 99 and what Anderson has accomplished is unrivaled. Sure Fedor, Wanderlei, Gomi, Tito, and Chuck had great runs but none dominated and cleaned out their division for 7 years. So many fighters were going to be the first to beat him. A lot of people thought there was no way he could even beat Rich Franklin then he embarrassed him twice. Then it was Henderson who was this great wrestler with crazy power, then Lietes and Maia with their incredible submission game, then the power and well roundness of Marquardt, the speed and power of Belfort. then the wrestling of Okami and Sonnen. He beat them all. Not to mention all the guys the UFC brought in that could never even make it to Silva... Like Kang, Akiyama, and Lombard.
If you're too naive or retarded to see that then you have no place talking MMA with us. Go troll Sherdog

Don't get your panties in a wad.
Fedor resume >>> Silva in all departments.
1. Top end competition faced
2. Depth of competition faced.
3. Losses
Better losses + better wins = Fedor > Silva
The real arguement is GSP vs Fedor FYI.
