I say good riddance to Paterno and his clear belief that he was bigger than the institution.
A decade removed from a shred of actual coaching, he basically forced the university to retain him in pursuit of Eddie Robinson's record.

At least with the Bear, it was just stuff like cops giving him rides home all the time. He quit when he felt like he didn't have anything left to offer. That was years and years ago for Joe Pa.

Nobody should ever become bigger than the institution.

You gotta feel sorry for Matt Millen if he knew nothing. Basically the pillars of his foundation are coming down. Going to be a rough few weeks/months for him and others like him.

Not now:

His son, Scott, is said to be "working on" plans for an off-campus news conference for Paterno to address the Jerry Sandusky scandal that has enveloped the university and the region.

However, those plans were scuttled, the New York Times says. Paterno instead will head to practice, as usual.

He should shut up and fade away. I don't believe he can make things better unless he has some stunning allegations to bring forth.

Good point. I think Paterno might have had his judgement clouded because of his ego. It's not just this incident, although this clearly is the atomic bomb comparatively. He's had a whole barrage of incidents involving his players committing rapes and other serious offenses that have simply been swept under the rug. It has always made me wonder if these incidents would have been handled a little differently if it wasn't in the hands of a dictator like Paterno.

How is this even possible? How can he or Red show their faces?

I think anything he can bring forth will only hurt him more. So I'd like to hear it

I wonder if the grad assistant burns JoePa for saying he was never told specifics?

Crazy old coot needs to retire today. Doesn't he realize he's become a laughing stock in NCAA football? You got your record Joe - now go away. No one else is egotistical enough to try and coach into their 80's to beat you.

I agree, but in his best interest he should just let it fade, which it will in time. I don't think he can help his position without some extraordinary evidence.

Have not read this entire thread, but on SVP just now Rinaldi has reported that a 9th victim has come forward. Sorry if this is old news.

That came out earlier. I'd expect a few more (at least) to come forward. Then maybe even more once the lawsuits against Penn St start rolling in. Every kid that was raped after the 1998 incident (which wasn't investigated) can sue the school for negligence.

I'll bet Joe Paterno wishes Matt Millen would stop saying he "knows Joe Paterno" after he said on air that he would trust Jerry Sandusky with his own kids

Did he really say that?

Millen...(ON JERRY SANDUSKY)

He's a helpful guy, he's a lighthearted guy, a smart guy, a willing-to-help person, he's everything you want. Could you see it coming? I've known the guy since 1976, been in meetings with him, he's been in my home .. I could never imagine this. I've got to think that's the same thing Coach Paterno thinks.

What we have to do is let it run it's course. The university has to set it's own timetable and they have to determine what that is.

Man's inhumanity towards man is just mindboggling. Where do we stop with this stuff?

The best way to deal with it is to deal with it honestly. No excuses, no explanations, step up, take what your'e supposed to take and move on.

Penn State program has always largely been above everything else. The shame of this, if it goes down the tracks it looks like it's going .. I still respected the fact that [Paterno] stood for something, he was able to stand his ground no matter what .. There are so many more good things that have come out of that program and from that man, but this is going to come up and bite him in the read end. I hope it doesn't."

he obviously just doesn't believe the charges against Sandusky have merit

and although that looks badly badly wrong I have sympathy for that point of view - if he thought he was a child molester the thing to do would have been to get him arrested and in treatment years ago. It isn't as crazy to deny reality than it would have been to think he was a pederast and still be ok with him walking the streets as a representative of PSU

In that way at least Millen sounds more rational than the "didn't really know anything" explanation Joe Pa allegedly gave his players recently

There's a theory in psychology that you can convince yourself of something other than the truth, and then truly believe the lie.

The problem with child sex crimes is that you truly are guilty immediately. Even if exonerated it sticks with you forever.
