Stash I agree that it's not usually the number of shots, except in extraordinary circumstances, but the number of players you are behind.

How does getting hit with the golf ball never hurt anyone more? I always think the tournament is gonna get really dark when someone goes down after a ball to the head.

Agree with this, but Tiger was 4 back and there were 17 people ahead of him when he had a broken leg at the US Open in 08. If he's still 17 people back after the 3rd round I understand the concern, but as you said there is still so much golf left.
