The WTA has been dead to me ever since Hingis and Seles retired. I guess I haven't missed much over the last ten years.

Finally Razzano! Serena gone!

Who's the favorite on the women's side now? Sharapova?

I told a buddy of mine before the tournament that Sharapova would win. I was concerned when I saw that Serena was in her quarter but now it looks better.

Has Serena made any excuses or acted like a pos yet?

The executives at ESPN and NBC are about to off themselves with Serena and Roddick out so early.

Not sure why. Neither of them have done much at the French lately. Roddick is usually out by the 3rd round and last time Serena won the singles was 2002.

The rowdy spectators in Court Philippe Chatrier chanting Razzano's first name would have been pulling for her anyway, of course, because of her citizenship. But their support was particularly strong because of her recent heartbreak, well-known in France: Razzano's fiancé -- Stephane Vidal, also her longtime coach -- died at age 32 of a brain tumor in May 2011, a little more than a week before her first-round match at last year's French Open.

He had encouraged her to go ahead and enter the tournament, so she did, honoring his memory by stepping on court to play, a black ribbon pinned to her shirt. When she walked out of the locker room for what turned out to be a straight-set loss, she wore a gold chain that Vidal had given her as a Valentine's Day gift a few years earlier.

"Honestly, the past is the past," Razzano said Tuesday. "I think now I did my mourning. I feel good today. It took time."

Said Williams: "I know of her story and her husband. We all have stories. I mean, I almost died, and Venus is struggling herself. So, you know, it's life."

I'm not offended or appalled in any way by Serena's statement. It's not like the dude just died last week. I mean, Jesus tittyfricking Christ, it was last year. And, to be fair, people do in fact die in this life of ours. We all have stories.

As an attorney licensed in two states and the district of columbia, I believe I have the requisite expertise to confidently and emphatically state for the record that the statute of limitations on the pulling out of the deceased fiance card ran several months ago.

Women seriously should not get the same amount of prize money as the men.

It took Azarenka about 20 minutes to beat that girl.

The Inequality of Equality

quote:

But if you think that is what we Brits would call a poor show, cast your eyes over Sesil Karatantcheva’s work. She needed just 49 minutes to dispose of Timea Babos of Hungary. The demolition job required just 82 points (and Babos lost all but 26 of them), but still the Hungarian walked away with that whopping great pay cheque.

At the other end of the spectrum, the boys were busting a gut. Novak Djokovic was not having things all his own way as he faced Potito Starace (and the Italians were obviously having a field day). Like his fellow world No.1, Azarenka, he too was kept on court for more than two hours as he huffed and puffed his way to a 7-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. But unlike Azarenka, Djokovic won the majority of his points (39 winners to 19 unforced fluffs) and he and Starace racked up just 46 errors to 64 winners in a match of 185 points.

quote:

As for Alex Bogomolov Jr, he literally worked himself to a standstill in his valiant attempt to reach the second round. He sweated and ran and defended for 4 hours and 16 minutes against Arnaud Clement until at match point down, he could run no more. Felled by cramp in the stifling heat of Roland Garros, he could not even stand up and had to give in. But he, too, walked away with $22,557.87 just like Brianti and Babos. That is equality for you.

Interesting read and she makes a great point.

Looks like Baker's magical run is about to come to an end. As much tennis as he has played these last couple of months, I'm sure his body needs a break. If it ends today, hopefully he can refuel and make a run during the upcoming grass courts. Doubt there is any way for him to jump Harrison or Donald Young, but I would much rather see the Baker kid at the Olympics representing the USA than either of the other two youngsters.

May have posted too soon...Looks like he fought back to take the 3rd set in a TB, won the 4th set easy and is now going into the 5th.
