Manfred has said MLB is exploring expansion. So at some point, its almost a sure thing that both Portland and Nashville will have a team, one way or another.
A's move to Vegas, Nashville and Portland get expansion teams... MLB moves to 8 4-team divisions like the NFL and expands the playoffs.
It's almost too logical.

People need to start paying more and more attention to what is going on in Cleveland. The lease with the city is up in 2023. They announced they are changing the team name and colors. They gutted payroll from 121 million to just 35 million (Lowest in MLB) this year. And Despite being the winningest franchise in MLB over the last 8 years, the Indians have finished in the bottom 3 of attendance. Dolan wants millions from the city of Cleveland for Progressive Field renovations...which are NOT likely to happen. There are rumors about Dolan selling the team behind closed doors. Lets just say its starting to get a little antsy in Cleveland. Cleveland to Nashville could be in play. Lets just hope Dolan sells the team to an owner who is local to avoid this.

I think I figured out local governments objection to this deal....
quote:
The A's have proposed a $12 billion mixed-use complex that would include a $1 billion privately funded ballpark along the Oakland waterfront. However those plans must be approved by the city council, which has so far refused to endorse or hold a formal vote on the project.

Why would the government oppose to $12B of private investment in their city?
The only reason I can think of is not enough kickbacks.

Orlando is not getting a team
The fan support for the Florida teams is atrocious

There is a 0% chance San Antonio Orlando or Jacksonville gets a team

Sounds like Rachel Phelps would fit right in...

It’s not $12B of private investment. The deal is styled as there being $1B of private investment for the stadium. Clearly, there is a public investment component.

Unfortunately for her, Miami already has a team.

The Rays stadium is in a dookie location and the Marlins have only tried to compete in earnest in what? Like 5 seasons. Tampa needs a new stadium that isn’t in a horrible location and the Marlins need ownership that understands that you play to win the game.

And as a result you think Tampa and Miami ownership would simply allow another team to move to one of those cities? Same with Houston and the Rangers in San Antonio. Because that is how these things work.

Yes, it is. That's for the whole development though, not solely for the ballpark.
Looking into it deeper, there is significant infrastructure improvements that would fall on the city, so you're right there is a public component as well.

The proposal, first unveiled three years ago, calls for a Howard Terminal waterfront development that, according to the team, will feature $12 billion in private investment, including a billion dollars for a new 35,000-capacity ballpark to replace the Coliseum. The development would also include 3,000 units of affordable housing, as well as 1.5 million square feet of office space, 270,000 square feet of retail space, a 400-room hotel, and an estimated $450 million in community benefits. The team is asking the city for $855 million in infrastructure improvements.

That isn't much (especially since this would clean up the Howard Terminal area).

They would make that back in tax revenue in short order.
I would assume the real hitch here is that there is no guarantee that the rest of the development comes to fruition. Is all that just fluff to get the ballpark built?

Cleveland looked to play about half its season in New Orleans back in the 1970s. Another Dave Dixon project. Amazing New Orleans used to have people like him.

Nashville, Portland, vegas have metro populations between 2.1M and 2.6M
Montreal has a metro population of 4.6M and had a fanbase that was supportive of their team. Their stadium is what ran the expos out of town.

Miami would not be impacted by Orlando at all and Tampa’s ownership would have to sway enough teams to give a damn. Tampa MSA has barely 500k more residents than the Orlando MSA and they have 3 Majors while Orlando has one. In fact, Orlando is the largest MSA with only one Big 4 team. San Antonio is second. The demographics are there for both cities. They’d be much better options than Portland. But the clear favorite is Las Vegas.

Currency and travel is at play here as well. Plus isolation. The only team that would be more isolated in MLB is the Mariners but they have a metro of 6 million and expanding further out they have the entire western half of the state of Washington.

Las Vegas is not a viable option for an MLB team.
More extreme park factors than Colorado, more heat than the Rangers, less local interest than a lot of clubs.
