They’re a historically great program with tons of tradition. Huge stadium, huge money, excellent resources. They should consistently be in the same conversation as LSU, Bama, Georgia, etc. Down years here and there, but always a few steps away from being an upper tier SEC team. Is this rock bottom?

recruiting and an ego that hasn't allowed them to accept realistic expectations and status

UGA and USC emerging in the early 00s was a major blow

their literally insane fanbase doesn't help

Hiring dogshit, inept coaches has not helped.

There are clearly some major cultural issues going on up there at that program.

For them to be this terrible for this long, and seemingly getting worse every year.

agreed 100%

i think a big part of that is taking risks on highly rated recruits with mental/attitude issues, which is the only reason they had a shot

They'll never be what they used to be but they also make terrible coaching hires. Butch Jones is the best choice on paper of all the guys since Fulmer and Butch Jones sucked.

A better question would be: how was it possible for Tennessee to be so good?

Aren’t they also one of the wealthiest programs in the SEC?

3 bad coaching hires in a row will absolutely tank a program.

having UGA and the California schools (namely USC) suck = getting lots of talent from GA and California

Fulmer embraced national recruiting earlier than most college coaches did, not to be novel but b/c he had to

I have been wondering this as well. It is mind boggling to me. I'm assuming Tennessee consistently has top 25 recruiting classes. They certainly should. Is it just as simple as poor coaching? I mean damn!!

Their fanbase going apeshit bc literally two coaching hires weren't up to their lofty standards didn't do much for the already toxic reputation they had

..and either Leach or Schiano would have been better than Pruitt, those idiots are just far too proud for their own good

the irony of Leach is that he's the perfect guy for a program like UTenn (who will have talent issues and needs a new identity) but their insane fanbase TRULY BELIEVES they're an elite program still and are above coaches like Leach

I don't know how well Leach would play longterm at any big SEC program. Too many people who wouldn't find his eccentricities cute once they racked up some losses. Old school Fulmer definitely wouldn't go for that.

They sincerely thought they had a shot at Gruden TWICE, and they take their cues from a Finebaum wannabe internet troll in Clay Travis.

That tells you all you need to know about their fan base.

Aside from their fans, that program has a severe cultural rot right now, as evidenced by the shitshow that was their coaching search last year, as well as the fact that Fulmer weaseled his way back into power.

They should have gone for Les Miles when they had a chance.
