Man, I just checked out some Caps boards and some people were actually complaining about Arnott for Steckel. Are these people suffering major head trauma?
Steckel is a good faceoff guy and a useful fourth line center. Making over $1 million a year. Arnott is a legit #2 center. The play the same position, people. And the presence of Steckel is what caused the need for a #2 center. Sure, Steckel is better at faceoffs. But can you imagine any situation in which the Caps would put Steckel on the ice solely for his faceoff skill? Because after the drop, you're stuck with David Steckel out there.
The Caps give up nothing except the guy they'd cut when they added Arnott AND they shed a bad contract. This is an awesome deal. It's like picking Arnott up off the waiver wire.

Perfect and I mean PERFECT deadline deals for the Caps. Exactly what I want. Good luck to Stecks but damn Arnott is what we need for the real games. Hell yes.

Trade is amended. Steckel and a 2nd round pick for Arnott. I still like it a lot. That's a small price to pay.
Now, the Caps have Backstrom and Arnott for the top two lines, and they can play mix and match for the bottom two lines, looking for the hot hand. I think Perrault is a breakout candidate, but they also have Johannson, Hendricks, and Beagle. They just need two of those 4 guys to play well (I'm assuming this means Laich settles in as a wing).

I like Steckel. He's a nice player and a very good faceoff man. But he's also a fourth line center with little offensive touch making over $1 million a year, and signed for two more years. I really do wish him well. He's a gutty player and he is a guy who is easy to root for.
Steckel is not Arnott. He's also blocking guys like Beagle and Perrault.
