I don't see how this is legal. Players are represented by a Union. Players organizing outside of the Union and making demands should not be allowed. Its against labor law, unless they vote out the current Union. The league shouldn't have to negotiate with multiple groups at multiple times or you just end up having to do the same things over and over. I have fired groups of employees for attempting a Union action (sick out) without the Union's knowledge. Union endorsed the action. They had no choice..
