College athletes in Georgia are now allowed to collect endorsements and sponsorships. And their schools can take a significant cut of that money if they want.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) signed the state's new bill regulating athletes' name, image and likeness rights on Thursday. Kemp held his signing ceremony at the University of Georgia with a Bulldog backdrop in the athletic department's recruiting lounge. The symbolism was meant to be obvious for a law ostensibly designed to let athletes profit off their own image rights starting on July 1.

But there's a provision in the law that allows colleges to have significant control over athletes' endorsement money.

The bill that Kemp signed into law allows schools across the state to take up to 75% of an athlete's endorsement income. That cut would be deposited into a pool for all athletes at the school and then redistributed upon athletes' graduation.

How would that provision work? If the University of Georgia decided to implement the provision and take 70% of each athlete's endorsement to redistribute, a player like J.T. Daniels would only make $30,000 on a $100,000 endorsement agreement.

The provision in the bill is restrictive and gives schools the right to have far too much control over an athlete's money. But it's fair to wonder just how many schools across the state will decide to exercise their rights to pool players' money.

So Kemp thinks Georgia's schools are now the player's agent?

75% is a lot

Though the kid would not have a platform to make endorsement money without the school so I guess its not unreasonable they get something

1. Kids can market themselves via Instagram.

2. Without the nba, Zion wouldn’t have as big of a platform as he currently does. Should he share some of his money with the league?

The kid is attractive as a spokesman because of playing for LSU. Not just because he is a good athlete

Without playing for the school he is nothing

I don't agree with the 75%, but this is a false equivalency. People follow college teams for the brands. People follow pro teams for the athletes.

If Zion went and played for a team in BR, people would show up to watch that team over the Pelicans. If every LSU player went and suited up for Tulane, LSU alums are still going to the LSU game.

I imagine this will affect recruiting of top athletes if they actually attempt this. You gotta be pretty dumb to accept this arrangement when you'll be able to get a better deal elsewhere.

It's up to 75%. The school doesn't have to take that much.

I'm already dreaming up the recruiting pitches.

School doesn’t have to take anything. Nor should they take anything.

Don’t tell that to the Yankees or the Lakers. Maybe their players should give them a cut because their franchises are bigger brands than their players’ brands are.

More than he already does or did you not think this through?

Republicans like whatever their financial backers tell them to like. Conservatives don’t. But hey if these athletes want to vote and simp for Democrats than they can live by Democrat policies.

If you think you’re creatively referring to the cba, that’s a substantially different argument. But you know that.

What percentage of Zion’s Jordan Brand checks go to the nba?
