I agree. Was watching it live. If you look up the score it will say retired at 5-5

How is he going to get into the ATP events? Wildcard?
He is only ranked 375. He'll be playing challengers and futures for a while.
Should have gone pro last year.

That would be my guess or the guy doing the feed simply didn't know what he was talking about, which is certainly possible

He'll definitely get a wildcard into the US Open (for winning the NCAAs). After that it would be up to the discretion of the tournament director.
He should probably start playing challengers first. Guys like Rhyne Williams and Tennys Sandgren have done well in futures, good in challengers, and struggled in actual ATP events. If he does well in challengers his ranking will move up quickly.
